By Paul FrommeltThe C.D. Hylton softball team's plan against Gar-Field on Thursday night was a simple one — senior Taylor Williams sets the table and freshman Shaelynn Braxton clears it. Williams played her part, going 4-for-4 with three singles and a double, two stolen bases and three runs scored. Braxton did her job as well with four hits — two for extra bases — and three RBI, as the Bulldogs improved to 3-0 in the Cardinal District with a 9-1 victory over the Indians.
"We came out here with a goal to make statement in the Cardinal District," said Williams, who will play for the University of Virginia next year. "I think with that win, we did. That big of a difference in the score, we're going to earn respect with it. Going out and betting them like that was just a good step for us."
The Bulldogs' leadoff hitter reached base in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings, scoring the game's first two runs. Through ten games, the senior is batting .556 with 17 runs scored.
"When Taylor gets on at any point in time, it gets everyone hyped. It's like a domino effect," said sophomore pitcher Kristina Braxton. "When you have so much talent on one team, it's really hard to stop it once it gets going."
It also helps that the Bulldogs had Shaelynn spraying the ball all over the field. The younger Braxton, who's batting .641 with 16 RBI, came up with Williams in scoring position three times. Each time, Shaelynn delivered a clutch hit.
"Even though she's so young, she's so mature," said Williams. "There have been so many situations this season where Shae has just come up so many times. The pressure never gets to her. It's amazing to see that much poise."
With her sister and Williams messing with the silverware, Kristina was busy feasting on Gar-Field batters. The Bulldogs' pitcher pitched a complete game, allowing no earned runs while striking out six. Braxton allowed only four hits, all singles, and faced the minimum batters in four of the seven innings.
"If we get close to a strikeout per inning with her, we are probably going to win the game," said Hylton head coach Harry Bell.
With the victory Bell's Bulldogs improve to 8-2 overall and remain undefeated in the district with three district games — including matchups against Woodbridge and defending district champ Forest Park — looming next week.
