Ashburn (May 14, 2009) - For the thrid time in four years, it will be Thomas Jefferson and Stone Bridge playing for the AAA Liberty District boys soccer title after the Colonials upset top-seeded McLean, 1-0, and the Bulldogs blanked Langley, 3-0, in the semifinals at Stone Bridge High School.
Thomas Jefferson (7-2-5 record) didn't have a lot of offensive chances against the Highlanders (10-3-1) but the Colonials made the most of a throwin that flicked off a head and then skittered through the box to an unmarked Sean Lee and the junior midfielder slotted the ball into the net with just 12:55 left in the contest.
It was McLean's first loss since March 23 and ended the Highlander's 8-0-1 during that stretch.
In the second semifinal, Stone Bridge's Mikey Herndon netted his second hat trick of the season as the Bulldogs posted a 3-0 win over the Saxons. Langley (8-3-2) has given up 16 goals on the season -- seven of them to Stone Bridge in two matches.
The Bulldogs (12-1-1), which returned just four starters from last year's Northern Region title team, have allowed just 11 goals on the season while scoring 32. Stone Bridge's offense stuggled in a 2-1 loss to McLean and 1-1 tie with Thomas Jefferson earlier in the year but has been averaging more than three goals a game in the last six contests with 19 total in that span. Herndon has now tied Ronnie Shaban for the school record for goals in a season with 14 total.
Herndon scored twice in the first half, the first goal coming after sophomore defender Tommy Dunne made a nice move into the left corner and then crossed the ball. Herndon ran onto it and took a shot that deflected off the keeper and right back to him and he put the second attempt in.
Later, Herndon ran onto a booming punt by Bulldog keeper Matt Miscione, who earned his second assist of the season while claiming his 21st career shutout between the pipes. With a stiff wind in his favor, Miscione's kick bounced nearly at the Saxon 18 and went over the keeper's head and Herndon ran onto it and touched it into the open goal.
Herndon's third goal came on a long clearout and he was holding just on his half of midfield and was off to the races, out-running the Saxon defense to the ball before weaving around the keeper and poking it into the empty net.
Notes: Friday's final was originally scheduled for Woodson as part of doubleheader with the girls but threats of rain has moved it to Marshall's turf field and an early 6 p.m. start ... McLean will claim the No. 2 seed for the Liberty in the Northern Region tournament as that is the lowest they can go as district champion. With Westfield falling in the Concorde District tournament, the loser of Friday's title match will have to face the top-ranked Bulldogs as Liberty's No. 3. The winner Friday will be the Liberty No. 1 seed. Langley takes the No. 4 seed ... McLean was playing without midfielder Tim Whitebread, who has been fighting injuries.
