Girls' Soccer Top 10.
*Rankings and records as of May 18
1. Broad Run (16-0-1) -- LW: 2
The Spartans have outscored their opponents 67-3 this year, and beat their three opponents last week by a combined, 17-0. Broad
Run opens postseason play against Loudoun County (8-6-2) on Tuesday night. It is currently ranked No. 4 nationally by ESPNRise.
2. West Springfield (13-1-2) -- LW: 4
The
Spartans have won 14 games
and tied once after opening the season with an 0-1-1 record. During its
streak, West Springfield has
outscored its opponents 46-1, including a 1-0 win over South County for
its third-straight Patriot District championship. It is currently
ranked No. 33 nationally by ESPNRise and hosts Mount Vernon (4-11-0) in the first round of the Northern Region Tournament.
3. Chantilly (14-2-1) -- LW: 8
The
Chargers
beat then-No. 10 Oakton in the Concorde District semifinals, 3-1, on
Wednesday before toppling previously-unbeaten -- and previous national
No. 1 -- Robinson in penalty kicks in the league title game. Chantilly
hosts Madison (7-6-1) in the first round of the Northern Region
Tournament.
4. Robinson (12-1-1) -- LW: 1
Last
week, the Rams dropped from the No. 1 spot nationally in the ESPNRise
poll to No. 23 after a penalty-kick loss to Chantilly in the Concorde District championship game. Last week,
this poll predicted a regional match-up between Robinson and No. 7
Stone Bridge in the Northern Region Tournament and, after a pair of
upsets, its coming in the first round on Tuesday.
5. Battlefield (15-2-1) -- LW: 5
The
Bobcats four games
last week, beating Osbourn Park,
2-0, on Tuesday; Stonewall Jackson, 6-0, on Wednesday; then-No. 6
Loudoun Valley, 2-1, on Thursday; before thumping Culpeper, 8-0, on
Monday night.
6. McLean (13-2-0) -- LW: 9
The
Highlanders
have
netted
a Northern Region-best 56 goals this season, and bolstered the meaning
of that stat by winning the Liberty District Tournament with
back-to-back wins over then-No. 3 Stone Bridge in penalty kicks and
then-No. 7 W.T. Woodson, 2-1, in the tournament championship game with
only 10 players. It hosts Centreville (6-5-1) and Jenna Richmond in the second game of a first-round regional doubleheader on Tuesday. The Highlanders are ranked No. 43 nationally by ESPNRise.
7. Stone Bridge (9-3-2) -- LW: 3
The
Bulldogs had won eight games in a row, but fell to No. 6 McLean in
penalty kicks in the Liberty District semifinals. Stone Bridge's two
other losses are to No. 1 Broad Run, 2-1, and McLean in the regular
season, 2-1. It travels to defending state champion Robinson in the
best first-round regional game in recent memory.
8. Loudoun Valley (14-2-0) -- LW: 6
The Vikings won three of their four games last week, but fell to
Battlefield, 2-1, for the second time this season. Loudoun Valley is
loaded with talent and will have a shot to avenges its regular-season
quibbles against Battlefield, if chalk holds, in the Cedar Run final on
Thursday.
9. W.T. Woodson (12-3-2) -- LW: 7
The
Cavaliers beat Madison, 2-1, in the Liberty District semifinals last
week before falling to shorthanded, sixth-ranked McLean, 2-1, in the
championship game. Woodson draws a tough first-round game in the
regional tournament, though, against Oakton (11-3-0) to whom it lost, 2-1, on May 6.
10. Woodbridge (12-2-1)
The Vikings locked up the top spot in the Cardinal District -- and a
first-round bye in the tournament -- with an 8-0 win over Potomac in
the season finale. Woodbridge faces fifth-seeded Gar-Field in the
district semifinals on Tuesday night.
