Herndon (3-2, 0-1) at Centreville (2-3, 0-0)
Last Week: Herndon lost to Langley, 28-13; Centreville won vs. Mount Vernon, 50-21
Playoff Position (SOS): Herndon (Div 6) T8th; Centreville (Div 6) 12th
The Hornets and Wildcats have traded wins each of the last four seasons. But from 1998 to 2005, Centreville won all eight meetings, four by shutout.
The Wildcats, in their first district action of the season, have not won a Concorde game since Oct. 26, 2007.
With Herndon's crushing home loss last week to previously winless Langley, Centreville may be catching it at the perfect time.
The Hornets allowed 227 yards to the Saxons in the first 14 minutes, 19 seconds, but held Langley to seven points in four first-half goal-to-go opportunities.
Herndon cut the lead to two points midway through the first quarter, but allowed 13 unanswered points to close the game. The Hornets committed seven fourth-quarter penalties, 13 overall.
Herndon allows 227.2 rushing yards per game. Centreville has exceeded that total twice -- the only two games it has won. That includes last week against Mount Vernon, when it gained 440 rushing yards on 44 carries.
The Wildcats scored the final 21 points to pull away for a 50-21 home win. Replacing its defensive line was Herndon's priority entering the season.
If Centreville cracks 200 rushing yards, it will earn its first Concorde win in almost two calendar years.
The Hornets offense will improve on their showing last week, so keep on an eye on the front seven that was without senior Sam Groter against the Saxons. That's where this game will be won or lost.
