West Potomac (1-4, 0-2) at W.T. Woodson (4-1, 1-1)
Last Week: West Potomac lost vs. South County, 23-7; Woodson won at Westfield, 28-7
Playoff Position (SOS): West Potomac (Div 6) 15h; Woodson (Div 6) T2nd
Dear Woodson: You are now on the radar.
After wins over Lake Braddock, Chantilly and Westfield -- the latter two by multiple scores -- people know about Trey Taylor's gang now.
Last week, in a 21-point road win over the Bulldogs, Cavalier senior quarterback Connor Reilly averaged a season-best 9.80 yards per pass attempt.
Yes, that season-best takes into account his school-record 504-yard game in a 43-42 win over the Bruins in Week 2. That night, he averaged a pedestrian 9.29 yards per throw. Slacker.
In addition to having the midseason favorite for first-team all-region quarterback, they feature a very well coached defense.
In the second half of the last three games, the unit has yielded 13 total points.
Woodson, tied for the No. 2 spot in the Division 6 playoffs, cruises into this Week 5 match-up with West Potomac, a team too talented to be 1-4 through five weeks.
The Wolverines, in recent seasons, have struggled to rebound from their initial loss of the season. Since 2007 and including this season, they are 4-11 after suffering their first defeat of the year.
West Potomac led West Springfield at the half two weeks ago and was tied with South County last week, but had its offense held to 60 total second-half yards in those two weeks combined.
The key to this game is the first quarter.
With how these teams have performed late in games recently, the Wolverines can not afford an early deficit. The Cavaliers, for their part, can not overlook this opponent because of the vast PowerPoint disparity.
The Spartans and Stallions were almost snake-bitten already. It's just a matter of time before West Potomac gets back in the win column.
These teams have not met in the last 12 years.
