Staff Report

The draw made it inevitable. Hoosier Crossroads Conference teams began eliminating each other in the first round of sectional play. That trend will continue Saturday in semi-final action. Nonetheless, seven league squads are still fighting.

At Lafayette, McCutcheon survived Lafayette Jefferson in a classic. The Mavericks triumphed 22-25, 25-18, 25-20, 20-25, and 15-12 in the fifth set. Their reward is to face another conference foe, Harrison, in the second round.

The Zionsville Sectional was destined to be an HCC bloodbath and it certainly was. Westfield downed Zionsville in three sets 25-15, 25-22, and 25-22. Meanwhile Hamilton Southeastern beat up on Noblesville 25-13, 25-11, 25-7. The important thing in these results is that there will be no rematch between HSE and Zionsville. The Eagles delivered the only loss on the Royals’ slate this year. However, Westfield will step in instead, so another league team will fall. Fishers will see Carmel in the other semi-final.

Avon was expected to have a tough time with Pike at the Red Devils Sectional. So much for expectations. The Orioles cruised in three sets, 25-11, 25-22, and 25-22. You guessed it. The next roadblock is another HCC squad. Brownsburg waits in the second round
