It was an extremely intense battle between two of the top girls basketball teams in the DCIAA. Emotions ran high as each team pushed for a win.
Four minutes into the first quarter of the game, the Lady Warriors were up 11-6, leading by 5 points. With each three-point shot by Lady Riders Aysia Smith, Roosevelt inched nearer towards closing the gap between the scores, but just couldn't keep up as Lady Warriors' #10 Bernisha Pinkett continued to throw several 3-point shots during the game, as well.
The Lady Warriors defeated the Lady Riders 84-72. Both Lady Riders' Aysia Smith and Lady Warriors' Bernisha Pinkett were recognized during a ceremony at the end of the game as "Most Valuable Players" for the 2008 basketball season.
With over 400 spectators in the stands, unfortunately not nearly as many as were present during the boys championship game last week, but nonetheless a good showing, Roosevelt and Woodson demonstrated top level competition. Roosevelt put up a strong fight against the Warriors, but they werent enough to match the strength of the Warriors. Wednesdays win marks the fourth consecutive DCIAA Girls Basketball Championship win for the Lady Warriors, and they are looking forward to taking on McNamara (WCAC) at the Verizon Center next Tuesday, March 4th at 5:30pm.
