INDIANAPOLIS – Lebanon pulled out a thriller in the nightcap of the 10th Annual PeyBack Classic Aug. 21 at Lucas Oil Stadium, upsetting Class 4A No. 16 Mooresville, 14-7, on senior Trent Richardson’s winning touchdown run from six yards out with 5:29 remaining in the game.
Mooresville held a 7-0 lead after the first quarter on a 46-yard touchdown scamper by senior quarterback Andrew Gibson. Spinning through the Tigers defense and tight-roping down the sideline, Gibson made the most memorable play of the game.
Yet Lebanon caught a huge break in the second quarter when senior Dustin Shipley recovered a fumble at the Mooresville 17 and rumbled untouched into the end zone to tie the score at 7-7.
Lebanon coach Kent Wright credited his defense for keeping the Tigers in the game.
"The defense did a great job, causing a turnover and making a score," said ninth-year Tiger mentor.
Over the last 15 years, Mooresville had owned a 10-5 series advantage, including a pair of victories in ’08 (20-6 in the season opener, 35-0 in the sectional opener). The Pioneers had won the previous four games, with Lebanon’s last win coming in overtime, 24-23, on the road back in 2005.
Next up for Lebanon is an Aug. 28 home date with 4A third-ranked Carmel (0-1), a 7-3 Week 1 loser to 4A No. 1 Indianapolis Cathedral. Mooresville will travel next Friday to Indianapolis Manual (0-1), a 54-6 loser at Martinsville.
