Nice guys finish last?

Well, Will Connerley is a nice guy who just signed a baseball scholarship with East Carolina University, far from a last resort for the Lee-Davis super student-athlete.

Connerley, who carries a 4.0 GPA while playing football in the fall and baseball during the spring, has been interested in the Pirates since he entered high school.

"It's always been one of my favorite schools," Connerley said. "I've always liked it. I've been going to camp there for three or four years."

And if you play catcher well at ECU, the spot Connerley will take his powerful bat and arm, you usually get a shot at the big leagues.

Take Jake Smith, who won the coveted Johnny Bench Award in 2006 in honor of the best catcher in the collegiate ranks before being selected by the Oakland A's.

That's far from Connerley's mind at this point, but a nice feather to keep in his new purple cap.

"I think it is an honor to be following those guys up," Connerley said.
