Hall of Fame

The Atholton Athletic Hall of Fame was instituted many years ago, then forgotten along the way. In 2008, Wendell Thomas resurrected the Hall of Fame and created the Annual Hall of Fame Dinner and induction ceremony.  Hall of Famers are chosen by a committee based on their excellence on the fields and courts and their contributions to Atholton Athletics.

Football assistant for 25+ years, jv basketball coach 75-79, v basketball coach 80 until present, lacrosse jv coach 12 years and assistant coach 12 years. Howard County Coach of the Year several times. All Met Coach of the Year in 82. Over 350 wins, 8 Howard County Championships, 2 Regional Championships, State Semi-finalist in 82 and 09.

Mark Carper
Graduated in 1986, JV football and basketball in '83, V basketball, baseball and football '84 and '85 and V basketball and baseball in '86, All-County baseball and football in '85, Howard County Player of the year in football, All-Metro in baseball in '86 and Baltimore Sun Athlete of the Year in '85 and '86. He had outstanding accomplishments in football, basketball, and baseball. Mark pitched on the National Championship Team at Stanford and pitched in the Triple A World Series Champions (New York Yankees Farm Team)

Carolyn Forde Buresh
Graduated in 82, jv softball 79, v cc 79, 80 and 81, v indoor track 79, 80 and 81, v outdoor track 80, 81 and 82. Team Captain numerous times as well as MVP and All-Met. HS All-American in 82. NHS member at AHS and set record for 1600 m outdoor track that lasted 25 yrs. Full scholarship for track/xc to U of MD. And graduated Magna Cum Laude. Division I All American in Outdoor Track in 86. ACC 1500 m champ and scholar-athlete award recipient at U of MD and broke several UMCP running records.

Glenn DeVane
Graduated in 71, v cc 68, 69, 70 and T&F 68, 69, 70 and 71, wrestling 68, 69, 70 and 71 and football in 71. Outstanding wrestling award in 71, State Champion in 220 yd dash and 100 yd dash, Howard County Wrestling Champion in 70 and 71, MPSSAA Regional Champion 100, 220 yd. dash in 69 and 70. State Champion and State record holder in 220 yd dash in 71 and State Champion in 100 yd dash in 71. Howard County Record Holder in 100, 220 yd dash and Long Jump.

Kori Kindbom
Graduated in 1981, v softball 4 yrs (All-County 3), v basketball 3 yrs (All-County 3), jv b-ball 1 yr, v F. H. (All-County 2 yrs & POY sr. yr, jv F.H. 2 yrs. Selected as Outstanding Player in FH, B-ball & S-ball. First female to win Glen Devane Award. Female Athlete of the Year sr. yr & county record for goals scored in FH. A member of the HC Hall of Fame & UMBC Hall of Fame (B-ball and Lacrosse).

Tim Lewis
Graduated in 77, v cc 73, 74, 75 and 76 (captain 75 & 76). County and District Champions in 75 & 76. Competed in State Championship all 4 yrs in cross country, wrestling 73, 74, 75 and 76, jv lax 74 and v lax 75, recipient of Glenn DeVane Award in wrestling, AHS Outstanding Wrestling award in 77, AHS Outstanding Senior Athlete Award in 77, NHS member, Merit Scholastic Award, first 4 time HC Wrestling Champion, runner-up regional champion in 74, 2 time regional champion in 76 and 77 and runner-up in 76, undefeated all 4 yrs in dual meets and personal record in high school of 94 w and 6 losses. Went on to Cornell and wrestled until an injury ended career. Currently a financial consultant for corporations.

Tammy McCarthy
Graduated in 83, V. basketball (3yrs), jv basketball (1), v track (4 yrs), v soccer ( 2yrs), Sophomore yr-Team captain in basketball, and 2nd Team All-County and county discus champ, jr. yr-soccer team captain and leading scorer, basketball-team captain and leading scorer and rebounder. Ho C Times, Ho Co News, Washington Post 1st Team All-County, Baltimore Sun and News American All-Met and Outstanding Female b-ball player. School record in discus. Sr yr-All-County Basketball, POY Columbia Flier, All Met Basketball, went to states in basketball, again outstanding female basketball player for AHS, captain of basketball and soccer teams and NHS Member. Attended UMBC on a basketball scholarship. Member of UMBC Athletic Hall of Fame. Outstanding junior and senior Athlete Award at UMBC and jersey retired. Currently holds the record for scoring for both men’s and women’s basketball at UMBC. Nominated to the District 2 All-American Team

Sherri Orlosky
Graduated 1990, v basketball 4 yrs, v volleyball 3 yrs, v softball 1 yr, jv softball and volleyball I yr, 1990 Gatorade MD Basketball Player of the Year, USA Honorable Mention All-American, 1st Team All-Metro 90, 1st Team All-County 88 and 90, POY in 1990, v-ball All-Met and All-County in 89 and 90 & POY in 88 & 89. Two-time State V-ball Champs 88 and 89Valedictorian, 4.0 GPA. Attended Notre Dame on basketball scholarship. Made the All tournament team (MCC) in 92 and made the NCAA tournament first round 2 times. MCC conference Champions 91 and 92. Started 3 yrs on N.D. B-ball Team and finished 10th on the all-time 3 pt shooting percentage. Inducted into The Women’s Howard County Athletic Hall of Fame in 05.

Jeff Peek
Graduated in 1983, v. soccer 4 yrs, jv lax 1 yr, v. lax 3 yrs. First Team All-County in Lax in 82 and 83. AHS 1st High School All-American Lax Player, set records for most points and assists. Led AHS to its only County Lacrosse Championship in 83. Received scholarship to Towson to play lax. One of the top scholar-athletes ever to play at Towson. ECC Scholar-Athlete for 3 years & ECC Player of the Year. Led Tigers with scoring 3 years in a row & 3 consecutive ECC Championships. As a captain sr year was named Honorable Mention All-American & selected to the North/South All-Star Game. Fifth leading scorer in Towson history & inducted into their Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997. Currently a practicing attorney in Baltimore.

Allison Valentino
Graduated in 93, received 10 varsity letters in Soccer, Lacrosse and Basketball, v b-ball90-93, v lax 91-93, v soccer 90-92, jv lax 90. Varsity in lax and Soccer as freshman and starter in both. Jersey retired in 93 in lax. Outstanding Female Athlete in 93, Army Reserve Scholar-Athlete in 93MVP in b-ball and lax in 93jv MVP in lax in 90, All-County 1st Team in Lax 92 and 93, 2nd Team All-Metro in lax in 93& 1st Team All-Academic in lax in 93. Set 10 different records in lax at AHS. Captain in both B-ball and Lax. Led Loyola College to National Championship game and led team in assists as sophomore and 2nd on team with goals and total points. A 3 time All-American lax player in 96 and 97 at Loyola. Has coached at Duke, U of MD and currently at the Naval Academy. Was Head coach at Ohio U. Was inducted in the Balto Chapter Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 08
2009 Brian VanDeusen Graduated in 1992, football: v 2 yrs, jv 2 yrs, basketball: v 2 yrs, jv 2 yrs, baseball: v 3 yrs, jv 1. POY in f-ball & baseball sr. yr. All-Met & All-State in baseball. Crown All-star game & Team MD for baseball. Led baseball team to County Championship in 90 and 92. Played f-ball & baseball at WM College & was a 3 time All-conference F-ball (quarterback). In 96 Centennial Conference POY for baseball. Holder of several records for Centennial Conference & Western MD in f-ball. Served as Assistant Baseball Coach at WMC. RHHS basketball coach & v f-ball coach at RHHS (2007 & 2008 State Champs), All-Metro coach of the Year & Mid-East Coach of the Year (NFHS)

Georgiann Bankert
Teacher/Coach

Teacher/Coach at Atholton High School from 1966-96. Coach Bankert  coached The Field Hockey Team for 16 years taking the 1980 team to the State Finals and losing on a penalty stroke.  This was the only Atholton Field Hockey Team to make it to the State Finals.  Coach Bankert also coached the Girl’s Track and Field Teams for 9 years and produced several State Champions.

Edgar Boxwell
Teacher/Coach/Athletic Director

Coach Boxwell started the first high school wrestling program in Howard County in 1963.  He was Athletic Director for 20 years, Wrestling Coach from 1966-1985, Football Coach from 1966-1974 and Assistant Cross Country Coach from 1970-1980 at Atholton High School.  He was Howard County Wrestling Coach of the year 3 times and is currently a member of The MD. State Athletic Directors Hall of Fame and The National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Col. (Retired) Earl E. Lauer
Coach

Highly successful Coach of Atholton’s Cross Country/Wrestling/Indoor & Outdoor Track Programs.  Coach Lauer produced 54 Howard County and Regional Championships and 5 MD. State Championships.  He coached at Atholton from 1971 until 1995.  He received Atholton High School Coach of the Year in 1983 and 1988 and Baltimore Sun Metropolitan Coach of the Year in 1987.  He has been inducted into Montgomery College Hall of Fame, Howard County Wrestling Association Hall of Fame, River Hill H.S. Hall of Fame and The National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Mr. and Mrs. Hugh McQueeney
Athletic Booster President/Parent of Student-Athletes
The late Hugh served as President of the Boosters for six years beginning 1991-92.  Parents of Ryan, Eileen and Rachel, both Hugh and his wife Stephanie worked on may projects in support of the Atholton Athletic Programs.  They were the first to raise the bar for extremely high budgets to finance supplementary items for our many athletic teams.  They put in countless hours for the benefit of Atholton’s Athletic Teams.

Paul Pfister
Football Statistician/Parent/Legacy
The late Mr. Pfister was a permanent fixture at all of Atholton’s Football Games.  He maintained accurate stats through 4 Football Coaches.  His ability to keep accurate stats was a major role in the successes that our football teams had in the past.  He also served as a Track and Field Official.  He was the Father of 4 Atholton graduates…Steve, Paul, Mark and Patti.  Our annual golf tournament is named in his honor.

Patrick Saunderson

Student/Teacher/Coach/Athletic Director
Coach Saunderson lettered in Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor Track from 1983-87.  He earned 8 varsity letters and was team captain for 6 seasons.  He was awarded the Glen DeVane Award for Athletic Excellence.  He coached 5 State Championship Teams and several County and Regional Championship Teams.  He was selected twice as All Metro Coach of The Year by The Washington Post and The Baltimore Sun.  Former Principal of Lime Kiln Middle and currently Marriotts Ridge High School.

Don Van Deusen
Teacher/Coach/Athletic Director 1974-1996
Coach Van as he was known, coached Atholton’s Varsity Football Team, Varsity Boy’s Basketball Team, Varsity Baseball Team, Varsity Girl’s Basketball Team and The Girl’s Indoor Track Team.  He received honors as Coach of the year in Football, Basketball and Baseball.  He is a member of MD’s Fastpitch Softball HOF, Concord College HOF, MD State Baseball Coaches HOF, MD State Athletic Director’s HOF, North Shore HS HOF and River Hill HS HOF.

Victor (Wajcihovski) Woods
Teacher/Coach/Athletic Director

Coach Wood coached Atholton’s Football Team from 1967 until 1974.  He was Atholton’s Athletic Director at the time of his retirement in 1978.  Coach Wood was inducted into the Mt. St. Joseph H. S. Hall of Fame in 1988 and The MD. High School Hall of Fame in 1991.  He played halfback for the University of Notre Dame.  Described by media and former players as a no-nonsense coach who demanded excellence-his teams never gave up and he was feared, respected and loved by his players.

Graydon Webster
Teacher/Coach/Assistant Principal
Mr. Webster coached or helped coach JV and Varsity Football, Wrestling, Boys and Girls Outdoor Track, Girls JV and Varsity Basketball, Girls JV Soccer and Indoor Track.  Some of his track athletes were State Champions and held State Records for years.  He had a JV county winning streak of 43 games in a row at one time.  He sponsored the AHS Letterman’s Club for 15 years.
