Atholton is fortunate to have the services of athletic trainer Lisa Lodovici. Lisa helps keep our athletes in peak physical fitness to participate and compete with their teams. Lisa prescribes routines and corrective exercises for our injured athletes that assist in their recovery. Rehabilitation and reconditioning of athletic injuries is crucial in avoiding future problems. We appreciate her dedication and hard work.

Trainer Qualifications:
The general community often confuses a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) with a Personal Trainer.  As established by the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA), the Athletic Trainer is a highly trained professional who practices within six domains:

  • Prevention of athletic injuries
  • Recognition, Evaluation, and Assessment of athletic injuries
  • Immediate Care of athletic injuries
  • Treatment, Rehabilitation, and Reconditioning of athletic injuries
  • Organization and Administration, and
  • Professional development and Responsibility

Unlike a Personal Trainer, education at minimum for an ATC would include, a Bachelor's degree, typically in such fields as pre-med, athletic training, exercise science/kinesiology or physical ed.  (Personal Trainers need no college education and do not have a governing body to certify or license).  The B.S. degree course work for ATCs must include, at minimum: human anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, exercise science, motor learning/development, therapeutic modalities, therapeutic exercise, and nutrition.  Once all the educational requirements have been met, the Athletic Trainer is eligible to sit for the NATA's Certification Exam.  The exam consists of three parts, all of which are required for certification.

Here's how Lisa spends her hours at Atholton:
There is often some confusion as to why Lisa is at some sporting events and not others.  She is a full-time employee of Kernan Hospital (University of Maryland Medicine). Lisa is considered a clinical/high school outreach ATC.  Her morning hours are spent in an outpatient PT site and the afternoon at AHS.  Howard County Public School System developed a contract with her hospital to provide medical coverage for the sport teams...The contract states 20-25 hrs/wk.  ALL HOME JV/VARSITY FOOTBALL,WRESTLING & BOYS LACROSSE GAMES MUST BE COVERED BY A CERTIFIED ATHLETIC TRAINER!
