Purcellville (Aug. 21, 2007) - For four days Greater Loudoun was not only the host of the 2007 13-Year-Old Babe Ruth World Series, but the Lions were the toast of the event as they posted a perfect 2-0 record and were within one win of clinching a bye into the semifinals. A tough Tuesday, however, saw Greater Loudoun bounced from the tournament after dropping a pair of close contests to Hopewell Valley NJ and Youngstown OH.

Hometown Heroes: Greater Loudoun Wins 13-Year-Old Babe Ruth WS Opener in Extra Innings

Purcellville (Aug. 18, 2007) - Like most of the Greater Loudoun 13-Year-Old Babe Ruth World Series team second baseman Jonathan Sarty was simply itching to get onto the field and play. First, however, the home team had to wait through three games Saturday and a spectacular opening ceremony that included Babe Ruth's 89-year-old daughter, Julia Ruth Stevens, throwing out the first pitch.

When the Lions finally took the field under the lights against a team from Bryant, Ark. they wasted no time in thrilling the local fans with three quick runs in the top of the first inning. Bryant showed why they were the Southwest Region champions and came back to tie the game with two runs in the fourth and a run in the sixth inning.
Sarty, the lead-off hitter who had scored the first run of the contest, showed his impatience again in extra innings as he notched a goal -- collecting a game-winning hit with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the World Series -- a tad early ... settling instead for a game-winning hit with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning as his line drive to left field scored Ryan Rentfro who had reached on a one-out single and moved around to third on Bryant's only error of the game.
