One day after being shutout by Archbishop Curley to end a five game winning streak, Loyola bounced right back to become the second consecutive team to post double digit runs against top-ranked Calvert Hall and the surge carried the Dons to an 11-8 MIAA A Conference victory over the Cardinals, yesterday at Blakefield.
Loyola broke a 2-2 tie with five runs in the bottom the second and seven different players would go on to produce at least one RBI in the contest for the Dons. Senior pitcher Bobby Kirby was not at his dominating best, but he was tough enough to navigate the powerful Calvert Hall lineup through six innings to earn his sixth victory of the year. He got a helping hand from teammate Harry Slade, who pitched a scoreless seventh to earn his third save of the season.
Tommy Carroll led a 13 hit attack fpr Loyola with a single, double and home run, while Slade had two hits and scored two runs. Kevin Shields and Andrew Hahn also had two hits and two RBI each. Matt Fairbank had a two-run home run for the Cardinals.

The Dons (19-7 overall) improved to 9-5 in the MIAA A Conference, where they remained tied for fourth-place with St. Paul's, which rolled past McDonogh yesterday, 9-1. Calvert Hall (20-7, 12-3) was trying to rebound from a 10-3 setback at the hands of Archbishop Spalding, on Wednesday, and now has lost three of their last four. The Cardinals now sit one game back of first-place Spalding (13-2) while Curley (10-4) continues to hold third-place.
The Cardinals were trailing 7-2 going into the top of the third, when they
scored three times. Pat Balir triggerd that rally with a single to left, and the Cards would tie the game at 7-7 in the fourth with
Kevin Lingerman delivering a clutch hit, but Loyola responded to the challenge.
Tommy Carroll put Loyola back on top, in the bottom of the fifth, with a solo homer down the left field line and Blakefield would get three more tallies in the inning, aided by two bad hop base hits.
Pinch hitter Jimmy O'Brien hit a bouncer to short that looked like a routine grounder, when a bad hop handcuffed All-MIAA shortstop Blair. Then, with two men on, it looked like catcher Mark Quaranta's grounder to first would end the inning, but when it bounced high over Justin Anderson's head and into right field, two more Dons would score.
"I'm proud of the way we hung in there after Calvert Hall battled back to tie it," said Loyola coach Mike DelGaudio.
The win was a big confidence booster for the Dons, who now visit league leading Archbishop Spalding today. The Cardinals will look to get back on track, on Saturday, when they travel to St. Paul's for a battle with the Crusaders, who are also surging.
With so many teams playing well, the MIAA A Conference tournament, which gets underway on May 12, promises to be as exciting and wide open as it has been in quite some time.
