Barstow debaters Rana Aliani and Brandon Bachar placed third in the Judge Ken Karas Novice Policy division of the 29th Annual Glenbrooks Debate Tournament, Chicago, IL on Sunday, November 23.
Rana and Brandon defeated teams from Notre Dame (CA), Valley (IA), Ruston (LA), and two Chicago-area high schools to claim the Semi-finalist trophy.
The other novice Barstow students debated in Junior Varsity because the tournament limits schools to a single entry in the novice division. That means they were competing against students who ranged from being sophomores to seniors, some in their third year of debate. I was very pleased that both teams had some wins and grew exponentially as the tournament progressed. Jared Wright, Shazhad Aslam, Katie Anderson and Conor McMann will all be forces to reckon with in the future because of their experiences at the Glenbrooks.
To give you some context, the Glenbrooks is the largest high school speech and debate tournament hosted by a high school in the US, annually attracting over 1500 contestants from over 220 schools from at least 35 states. It is considered one of the most prestigious tournaments on the national high school debate circuit.
