Maryvale Prep will go for a repeat in the IAAM A indoor soccer tournament, defeating No. 1 seed Institute of Notre Dame, 5-1, in a semifinal Wednesday afternoon at DuBurns Arena in Canton.
No. 4 seed Maryvale (7-2-2 overall) will face John Carroll for the glass bowl Friday afternoon following the 3 p.m. B finals between Garrison Forest and Baltimore Lutheran. The third-seeded Patriots defeated Friends School, 7-2, in the other semifinal match.
Maryvale avenged a 3-2 loss to the Indians (10-1) during the regular season, handing the east Baltimore school its first setback. The Brooklandville school ended IND's five-year reign as IAAM A champ with a 3-2 decision at DuBurns.
"We played hard for the entire game, taking a lot of shots throughout," said IND coach Lauren Cunningham, whose team lone tally came from Sabrina Mullaney. "Unfortunately, only one made it in the goal."
John Carroll (7-1-2) had no problems finding the back of the net against the No. 2 Quaker. After falling behind 1-0 early, the Harford County school dominated as junior Paige Hollenback scored three goals and had an assist, and sophomore Liz Loiodice scored twice.
Senior Tori Ripple overcame a shaky start, posting 17 saves in goal for the Patriots, who defeated Friends (9-3-2), 7-4, during the regular season. Colleen O'Connell and freshman Kadie Hook each scored a goal, and sophomore Shelby Smith handed out two assists.
Friday's title match will be rematch from the regular season as the teams played to a 5-5 tie at the Perring Athletic Club Dec. 18. The Lions will attempt to follow a fall soccer crown (won B for second straight season) with a winter championship.
