THE DIGITAL TOP 20: GIRLS BASKETBALL     January 22, 2008

1)  Seton Keough (18-1) (last week: 1)
The Gators cemented their top ranking by beating two ranked league opponents. They topped No. 10 Spalding by 19 (70-51) with extreme balance: Aysa Bussie 18, Arika Ullman 18 and Ayana Lee 18, and then beat No. 6 Mercy by 25 (61-36) as Bussie scored 18 again.
Next: vs St. Mary’s Sat Jan 26 (only game)

The Wildcats also handled two ranked league opponents, just as Keough did. They beat No. 19 Old Mill by 26 (69-43) as Ashley Davis scored 20 and Sheronne Vails 19, and then took care of No. 12 South River by 14 (68-54) as Vails scored 20.
Next: @ Severna Park Fri Jan 25 (only game)

8)  Atholton (9-3) (last week: 11)
The Raiders were on exam break and did not play. Others around them lost, and Atholton was close to
Mount Hebron into the fourth quarter in an earlier game, so to be three spots away from No. 5 Hebron makes sense.
Next: vs Long Reach Wed Jan 23 / vs Centennial Fri Jan 25

9)  Archbishop Spalding (13-5) (last week: 9)
The Cavaliers lost their only game of the week, but due to strength of schedule it is a “quality loss” and they move up one spot. They fell to No. 1 Keough by 19 (70-51) despite 17 points from Brya Freeland.

13)  Winters Mill (14-0) (last week: 8)
The Falcons took a big step down, despite two wins and remaining unbeaten. Strength of schedule factors in. They beat Francis Scott Key by only two points (53-51), a team that was
1-6 coming into the game, as Jen Peters scored 22. Then they beat a 2-6
Westminster team by just six (54-48). Peters bailed them out with two late scores in the fourth, one a big three-pointer to seal the win. Barely beating two teams, both with losing records, drops them down.
Next: vs North Carroll Tue Jan 22 / vs Linganore Fri Jan 25

14)  McDonogh (10-8) (last week: 9)
The Eagles beat NDP by 28 (66-38) as Destiny Jacobs scored 15, but then lost to Towson Catholic by nine (57-48). Then McDonogh also lost to St. Mary’s-Ryken on Saturday by six (60-54). A pair of losses, one to a lower ranked team, drops the Eagles down five spots.
