Mervo High is again in the region finals after Thursday's victory over Patterson. In order to defend their 3A North title, the Mustangs must beat No. 1 Lake Clifton Saturday afternoon.

Byron Westmoreland scored 14 points, and Tyrone Smothers had 10 as No. 19 Mervo defeated Patterson, 46-38, in a Class 3A state North Region semifinal on Hillen Road Thursday.

The third-seeded Mustangs will play at Digital's No. 1 Lake Clifton Saturday at 2 p.m. for a berth in the state Final Four at Comcast Center. The Lakers defeated Milford Mill, 73-57, in the other region semifinal Thursday.

The defending region champ Mustangs opened a 15-point halftime lead as they defeated the Clippers for the second time this season. Tyrell Anderson led Patterson with 14 points and Coreise Bruce added 11.

Saturday's region finale will be a rematch from the regular season. The Baltimore City champ Lakers dominated Mervo, 70-38, using a 22-6 second quarter run to build a 21-point halftime lead. Senior guard Antoine Allen led all scorers with 26 points for Lake Clifton and junior forward Cleveland Melvin notched a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds, while Mustangs' leading scorer Byron Westmoreland had only 13.

Lake Clifton 73, Milford Mill 57

Cleveland Melvin scored 17 points, and Antoine Allen and Jason Sharp each scored 15 as No. 1 Lake Clifton ended Milford Mill's season in a 3A North Region semifinals. The Lakers will host No. 19 Mervo for the region title Saturday at 2 p.m.

Junior guard Derrious Gilmore and senior forward Daniel Horton each added 12 for the Baltimore City champions (24-1), who built a 31-20 halftime advantage. Senior center Brian Salisbury led Milford Mill (13-9) with 13 points, and Stephen McCray contributed 10.

Dunbar 57, Pikesville 54

Sean Farr scored a game-high 21 points, leading Dunbar past Pikesville in a 1A North Region semifinal match. The Poets will play at Owings Mills Saturday afternoon for the region title.

Junior guard Tavon Austin, and Tevin Brown each added 13 for the Poets (16-8), who were able to hold own despite hitting just four of 13 free throw attempts. Senior Marvin Bryant led Pikesville (15-6) with 15 points, and DeVohn Gilmore had 13.
