Mills Godwin, ranked first in the DigitalSports Top 10, defeated seventh-ranked Hermitage 3-0 in Tuesday night’s game.
With the win over Hermitage on the Panthers’ senior night, Godwin improves its unbeaten Colonial District record to 5-0 this season.
The Eagles maintained possession of the ball most of the game and dominated both halves, not allowing Hermitage to create any dangerous opportunities on goal.
Junior midfielder Anne Lumpkin put Godwin on the scoreboard with 18 minutes left in the first half when she was able to deliver a beautiful free kick from 20 yards out into the side netting.
Three minutes later, the Eagles added another goal to their lead.
Senior forward and captain Annemarie Cole turned a Hermitage defender in the box and fired a shot from six yards out that Hermitage goalkeeper Jessica Willkomm could not handle, putting Godwin up 2-0 heading into halftime.
The Eagles came out flying in the second half continuing to apply high pressure on the Hermitage back line.
Lumpkin did a great job of sitting in the middle of the park and picking apart the Panthers defense with through balls to her attackers.
“We wanted to come out hard,” Lumpkin said. “We knew it was their senior night and they were pumped. We were able to counter them, play our game and win. We did a good job of combining in the midfield and because they were playing high we were able to find the gaps.”
Godwin’s Melissa de Nijs put the nail in the coffin when she was able to slam home a miss clear by junior defender Melissa Davis from just inside the box to give the Eagles the 3-0 win.
