The Monacan Chiefs, ranked ninth in the DigitalSports Top 10 Poll, upset No. 1 ranked and undeafeated Cosby 1-0 late in the seventh inning in Thursday night’s game.
The game remained deadlocked through six straight innings due to excellent defense and pitching by both sides.
Monacan pitcher Megan Williams pitched an outstanding game throwing 10 strikeouts and Cosby’s Whitney Haller had nine strikeouts.
The winning run was scored in the seventh inning when second baseman Mandy Hopkins hit an RBI single over first base and down the first baseline putting Monacan up 1-0.
Cosby had one last opportunity to score in the bottom of the seventh but were stopped by Williams who threw strikes when she needed to and forced a couple easy pop outs to take the victory.
The Chiefs delt the Titans their first loss of the season and improve their record to 4-1 in the Dominion District and 7-2 overall.
