Thursday, March 13 was “retreat day” for six Mount De Sales sophomores, who started their day at an early morning Mass, and then traveled to the St. Joseph’s Nursing Home on Newberg Avenue in Catonsville to help spread Easter cheer to the residents there.
The girls were led by Courtney Gahagan, the Director of Communications at the school, who also serves as the Varsity Swimming Coach.
“We were able to read stories to the residents and play games,” said Amanda France, who said the trip was gratifying because the seniors here told us they really don’t get many visitors. I hope we can do this again,” she added.
“All of the sophomores were divided into groups today,” said Gahagan. “Some are visiting the Charlestown Nursing Home, some are visiting grade schools to help in Art Class and the sophomores who are here at St. Joseph’s are getting to know the residents on a first name basis.”
“It has been a wonderful experience for the students,” said Gahagan. “I hope we can do it again.”
The residents were very pleased to have so many visitors. To a person, they were all delighted that the school children could visit. Many expressed their appreciation, invited the students back, and even suggested that the girls write to them periodically.
“We don’t get too much mail, and it would really be nice to hear from them again, either in person, or through a letter,” said 96 year old Jenny Raymond. “I sure hope they can come back. “If not, I hope they keep us in their prayers.”
