After being apart of one of the most successful years in Mount St. Joseph football history, junior Renard Robinson is already training to help the Gaels contend again for the MIAA A Conference Championship.

Last year the Gaels went 6-4 under coach Chip Armstrong and took a share of the A Conference crown.  Robinson was one of the key components, but this fall, as a senior, the expectations for him will be greater.  Not to worry, no one has set the bar higher for Robinson and the Gaels, than Robinson himself.

“My goals for next year are to go 10-0 and be undisputed MIAA Champs, not just co-champs,” said Robinson. “In the off-season I have been working out while also running indoor and outdoor track. Next month, I will be attending the Penn State Nike Camp, so I'm going to be getting ready for that soon.”

With the Gaels returning manynkey players from last year’s somewhat surprise team, they will have a bull’s eye on their back more often.

As for Robinson, he can be seen by many as somewhat of a prototypical athlete. He works hard during the off-season and plays at a high level each and every game during the season. He plays the game the right way.

Last year, Robinson had 398 rushing yards on only 65 attempts, a remarkable six yards a carry. As a receiver, Robinson had 168 yards on only 11 catches, but also had three touchdowns.

While Robinson excels on the football field, scouts and coaches can also see him perform well in track and field. Last year, as a sophomore, Robinson was on the varsity indoor track and varsity outdoor track & field team teams.  And an accomplished sprinter on several St. Joe relays, Robinson is currently nursing a hamstring strain, but he expects to be ready to go for the stretch run when he hopes to add an MIAA track title to his impressive resume.

In addition football and track, Robinson showcased his variety of athletic talent by playing on the St. Joe freshman baseball team, during his first year at the Mount.

Next year, the Gaels will be a force to be reckoned with. With Coach Armstrong as the head coach, Robinson believes they have another chance to be great again.

“Mr. Armstrong is a cool coach," said Robinson.  "He's very relaxed during school but when we get on the field, he's all business which is the mentality you need to have in order to be successful.”

While Robinson hasn’t received any college offers or scholarships yet, he keeps working hard and is striving to help the Gaels anyway he can next year.

“I’m still waiting for that first one,” said Robinson, referring to a college offer.

And, according to his caoch, it will be well deserved when it finally arrives.

“Renard is one of the top returning football players in the MIAA and the state of Maryland. He doesn’t get the notoriety that some of the other players in the area do but I would not trade him for anyone," said Armstrong. Renard is a young man that our coaching staff has a great deal of faith in because of his athleticism, versatility and leadership abilities.

"He has played both receiver and running back at Mount St. Joe and also is an excellent return specialist.  He is a very sound person; a great football player but an even better person. I know it sounds like a cliché but he is the type of young man that anybody would be proud to have as a son. He has a 3.85 grade point average, possesses a quiet, confident demeanor and you rarely see him without a smile on his face.”

Robinson surely is a prototypical talented athlete that will succeed.
