Mount Vernon won its fifth consecutive game Friday night, earning a home playoff game in the upcoming Northern Region Division 5 playoffs with a 22-20 win at Yorktown Friday night.

The Majors jumped out to a 15-0 lead early in the second quarter on touchdown runs from seniors Kyle Ricks and Brandon O’Clisham from 1 and 18-yards, respectively.

Ricks finished with 83-yards on 15 carries while O’Clisham had nine carries for 58-yards.

“I was trying to pound it,” said an excited but exhausted Ricks following the game. “I was tired, but the coaches said to bite on my mouth piece and keep going. That’s what I had to do … just keep going.”

The Patriots answered, pulling within 15-7 by half time when senior quarterback Kyle Toulouse hit junior Charles Banks from seven yards out.

On their first possession of the second half Toulouse struck again, this time hitting junior Mike Veith (4 receptions, 108 yards) for a 30-yard score. After a failed two-point conversion attempt, Yorktown trailed Mount Vernon by two.

Unfortunately for the Patriots, the Majors rushing attack could not be stopped. On the first play of the next possession, senior quarterback Brian Green scampered 64-yards on an option keeper to the Yorktown 5-yard line. Senior Robert Coleman plowed in on the next play, pushing the Majors’ lead to nine.

Toulouse scored midway through the final quarter on a sneak from the 1-yard line as Yorktown once again closed within two points, but Mount Vernon’s stingy defense and ball control offense did not allow another scoring opportunity.

Mount Vernon racked up 260-yards on the ground, averaging 6.2 yards per carry.

Toulouse finished with 143-yards passing going 9-of-14 and had 57-yards rushing.

The Majors will finish the regular-season next week at Wakefield while Yorktown will try to get back on track at Washington-Lee.
