Mount Vernon (0-5, 0-2) at Hayfield (3-2, 2-0)
Last Week: Mount Vernon lost at Centreville, 50-21; Hayfield lost at Chantilly, 49-14
Playoff Position (SOS): Mount Vernon (Div 5) 15th; Hayfield (Div 5) 7th

Since a troubling 0-3 start, Mount Vernon has taken successive steps in the right direction, falling by two points at Stuart (3-2) in Week 4 and trailing Centreville (2-3) by a single score at the start of the final quarter last week.

The Majors were outgained 208 to minus-11 in the fourth and the Wildcats pulled away.

The Hawks, meanwhile, had their momentum snapped away in Chantilly last week. The Chargers scored the first 35 points en route to a 49-14 win.

Hayfield senior running back Rayshawn Rigans entered with two touchdowns in every game this year. He left with two rushing attempts for 14 yards.

Something interesting the Hawks did was move senior quarterback Anton McCallum to the X-receiver position where he flourished. He had four receptions for 70 yards and a touchdown, adding a 65-yard score when he was still under center in the first half.

While McCallum is crafted for the triple option, junior quarterback Jason Stewart is a highly capable backup. He went 9-for-15 passing for 147 yards, a touchdown toss to McCallum and no interceptions.

It's possible the change-up was due to its significant deficit, but it will be interesting to see how Hayfield lines up against Mount Vernon.

My guess is it will return to the triple option, its bread-and-butter offense, and hope to recreate some the big plays Centreville made on Mount Vernon last week en route to 440 rushing yards on 10.0 yards per attempt.

The Majors gave up six plays of 20 yards or more, three of which went for six.

The Hawks have won five of the last six games in this series, including each of the last four meetings. Though they have not met since 2004, Hayfield holds a 158-87 aggregate scoring advantage in those last six match-ups.
