It lived up to the billing, and then some.

The Sept. 23 match between Class 4A No. 2 undefeated Muncie Central and 3A second-ranked host Delta was an epic showdown. The Delaware County rivals battled through five intense games before the home-standing Eagles pulled the upset.

That is, if you can call it that. The Eagles prevailed 25-19, 19-25, 25-20, 18-25, 15-9 to hand the Bearcats their first loss of the season.

Momentum in this match swayed back and forth, depending on which team could successfully get into its offense. Both teams made that difficult on the opponent by, among other things, serving several aces. Delta had five on the evening, while Muncie Central knocked home eight service-winners.

If you are looking for a hero, look no further than Delta’s freshman setter, Morgan Bergren. The 5'11" Bergren did a masterful job of setting for the Eagles’ powerful senior hitter, 6’2” Darcy Dorton.

Dorton responded with 26 kills in the five games, nearly half of the 56 recorded by the Eagles.

The victory moves Delta to 16-4 on the season. More importantly, the Eagles lay claim to victories over both Muncie powers, Central and Burris, in the same year.

Those who know Munciana volleyball will testify that is a rare feat indeed.
