Clarksburg was a 2A state finalist last year with serious title game aspirations this season. Walter Johnson is a team that hasn’t won a game in the past three years just looking to end the streak.

Yet the Coyotes had to dig deep to beat the Wildcats Friday, beating Walter Johnson 12-7 after a slow start by its offense.

Clarksburg hadn’t had a scrimmage in the past two weeks, thus meaning little time in game situations to implement its new spread offense. That left the team a bit rusty in the first half of Friday’s game.

“We hadn’t practiced a lot of the new offense we put in and it really showed tonight in the first half,” Clarksburg Coach Larry Hurd said.

The Coyotes took an early 7-0 lead when junior Andrew Veith returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown. Clarksburg’s offense stalled and didn’t score until the third quarter on a 12-yard run by senior Mark Small. Clarksburg particularly mentioned the play of Walter Johnson linebacker Paul Okeyo as being troublesome for the Coyotes.

Clarksburg’s offense settled caught traction in the second half, raking up about 180 yards rushing in the half. Walter Johnson scored its touchdown with about one minute, 30 seconds left on a run by Michael Pittsenberger.

“I do have to credit Tom Mulholland and that coaching staff because they really did a good job,” Hurd said. “Okeyo is a really good football and they have a good quarterback who made some nice reads. … I expect us to play much much better. The mistakes that occurred tonight will be rectified.”
