Northwest Coach

Looking for answers after a tough start to the season, Northwest Coach Kevin Corpuz shuffled the lineup for Tuesday’s softball game.

The result, a 19-0 Jaguars win over Magruder.

Northwest (3-6) played its first errorless game of the season and got plenty of hitting in support of senior pitcher Tiffany Knight.

Knight pitched five shoutout innings, sophomore catcher Emily Forst went 5-for-5 with five RBIs and three runs. Kristin Lee was 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs and Hanna Yi was 1-for-5 with three RBI and four runs.

Knight allowed just three hits and issued one free pass in her best outing to date. While Knight allowed Magruder to put the ball in play, the Northwest defense backed her up with sound glove work and great throws.

Junior left fielder Erica Wolanin set the defensive tone early in the game by making a running catch in the left-center gap and throwing behind the runner all the way at first base for a double play in the first inning.

Although known this season for scoring a lot of runs, the Jaguars have also had the dubious distinction of blowing big leads in the middle and late innings. Thanks to the great hitting they've had all season and the new defensive alignment, Northwest scored 12 runs in the first inning to build a lead they would not relinquish.

Northwest's defense will be truly tested on Thursday when they travel to Gaithersburg for a divisional match up with the Trojans, who have given the Jaguars trouble in the past.
