Ahead by two points going into the final event, the Wolverines needed a win in the 400 Freestyle Relay. Freshman Kenzie Mackie, senior Kurt Weiss, junior Conrad Preston, and senior Captain Andrew Mooers delivered big time, touching first in a Washington State 3A qualifying time of 3:28.96. Teammates Justin Dellinger, Geoff Stokes, Andrew Barrett, and Hayden Goudy sealed the dual meet victory by taking 3rd place (3:42.96) and delivering its 2 points to Bellevue.
The Wolverines set up the showdown with Roosevelt with performances from a strong core of talented swimmers and divers. Freshman Kenzie Mackie took second in the 200 Freestyle (1:55.00) and added three first place finishes in the 100 Butterfly (58.96), 200 Freestyle Relay, and 400 Freestyle Relay. Not to be outdone, Bellevue's senior class stepped up and contributed a combined six wins. Weiss posted a win in the 1m Diving and was a member of the winning 200 Medley Relay, where he was joined by classmate and Captain Greg Nedell, and 400 Freestyle Relay team (with Mackie and Mooers). Mooers enjoyed his own success with wins in the 200 Freestyle (1:50.46), 100 Freestyle (50.71), 200 Freestyle Relay and 400 Freestyle Relay.
Perhaps most important in salvaging a win for Bellevue were individual victories late in the meet by juniors Andrew Barrett and Conrad Preston. Trailing Roosevelt 69-71 after the 200 Freestyle Relay, Barrett swam a gutsy 100 Backstroke to win the event in 1:02.53- his best time of the season. Preston followed with a commanding win in the 100 Breaststroke (1:07.14), finishing over 10 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor and sending the Wolverines back on top 87 to 85.
Bellevue looks ahead to another tough dual meet against rival Mercer Island High School at the Mary Wayte pool on Thursday, January 15, at 3:40PM.
