The tournament featured Washington's top 5 finishers in 2008 plus Oregon's 2008 state runner-up.
Junior Chase Middlesworth led the Wolverine offense with 12 goals, and senior Dan Ellis led the Wolverine defense with 46 blocks.
Bellevue vs Roosevelt
In a rematch of the 2008 state tournament's 3rd-4th place game, Bellevue edged Roosevelt in an exciting 11-10 come-from-behind victory. Though the Wolverines led for most of the game, Roosevelt scored three goals mid-way through the fourth quarter to turn a one-goal Bellevue lead into a two-goal Bellevue deficit. However, the Wolverines tied the score with a counterattack goal from Chase Middlesworth. Middlesworth scored again with under a minute to play on a man-advantage to put the Wolverines back on top, and a key block by Dan Ellis in Roosevelt's final possession helped the Wolverines escape with the victory. Middlesworth led the Wolverines with four goals and four steals. Sophomore Matt McKaig added two goals and two assists.
Bellevue vs Curtis
After emerging with a last-minute victory over Roosevelt, Bellevue was determined to make its next game was much less suspenseful. Thanks to a strong first-half effort that saw the Wolverines build an 8-4 halftime lead, Bellevue was able to easily defeat Curtis, the 2008 South League Champions, by a score of 12-7. Sophomore Jake VanWolvelaere led Bellevue with a career-high four goals on five shots. Senior captain Riley Smith added three goals, three steals and two ejections drawn.
Bellevue vs Southridge
Bellevue's third game of the tournament was against Southridge, Oregon's 2008 state runner-up. Bellevue jumped out to an early 2-1 first-quarter lead, but Southridge evened the score at 4-4 heading into halftime. In the third-quarter, Southridge outscored the Wolverines 3-2 to take a 7-6 lead into the final frame. But in the final quarter, Bellevue was unable to keep up with the Southridge attack, allowing three goals and ultimately falling by a score of 10-6. Chase Middlesworth led Bellevue with three goals and six steals, and senior captain Justin Dellinger added two goals and an assist.
Bellevue vs Mercer Island B
In its fourth and final game of Saturday's bracket play, Bellevue easily handled the Mercer Island "B" squad, 13-2. 11 of 13 Wolverines scored in the victory.
With the win, the Wolverines finished 3-1 in bracket play. The top two teams in the bracket were to advance to Sunday's semi-finals, and the Wolverines found themselves in a three-way tie for first-place with Roosevelt and Southridge. Unfortunately, the tiebreaker fell to goals-allowed, which did not work in Bellevue's favor. Southridge allowed 19 goals. Roosevelt: 29. Bellevue? 30. Thus, the Wolverines found themselves on the outside looking in and were left to compete in the 5th-8th bracket.
Bellevue vs Shorewood
In its first game on Sunday, the Wolverines jumped out to a 6-0 first-quarter led and never looked back, defeating Shorewood 13-2. Matt McKaig led Bellevue with four goals on four shots. Riley Smith had three goals. Chase Middlesworth added three steals and two ejections drawn.
Bellevue vs Newport
In its final game of the tournament, Bellevue defeated Newport 10-8 behind Chase Middlesworth, Doug Oakely and Adrian Costarella's offense and Dan Ellis' defense. Bellevue led throughout the game and took an 8-4 lead into the fourth-quarter. Newport scored four fourth-quarter goals, but the outcome was never in doubt and the Wolverines cruised to victory and a fifth-place finish. Middlesworth had three goals and Oakely and Costarella chipped in two goals apiece. Ellis had eight saves.
Bellevue (8-2) will look to capture its second league victory of the season when its faces Bainbridge Island on Friday at 7:00pm at Edgebrook Pool.
