10/3/09 -- The Bellevue Boys Water Polo team won six straight games and advanced to the championship of the Newberg Invitational before falling in the finals.  The 21st annual tournament featured sixteen of the top teams from Oregon and Washington.  Senior captain Justin Dellinger led the Wolverine defense with 19 steals.  Junior Chase Middlesworth led the Wolverine offense with 19 goals.

Bellevue vs Lake Oswego
In their first game of the tournament, Bellevue traded goals with Lake Oswego throughout the first three and a half quarters.  With less than a minute to play, Lake Oswego tied the game at 7-7 after a hole-set shot found the back of the net.  On Bellevue's next possession, junior Chase Middlesworth drew an ejection to give the Wolverines a man-up advantage.  Following a timeout, Middlesworth fired an outside shot past the goalie to put Bellevue ahead 8-7.  Dan Ellis blocked Lake Oswego's final shot attempt and the Wolverines escaped with a narrow victory.  Senior two-meter Hayden Goudy led the Wolverines with two goals and three steals.

Bellevue vs Lincoln
Looking to avoid the slow start that plagued the Wolverines against Lake Oswego, Bellevue came out firing against Lincoln High School.  Goals by seniors Doug Oakley, Riley Smith and junior Chase Middlesworth helped the Wolverines build a 3-1 first quarter lead.  Bellevue outscored Lincoln by two goals in each of the last three quarters to finish with a 13-5 victory.  Middlesworth led Bellevue with six goals and four steals, while Oakley chipped in two goals and two ejections drawn.

Bellevue vs Southridge
In its third and final game of the qualifying round, Bellevue faced Southridge, one of only two teams to defeat the Wolverines in 2009.  In their first meeting, Southridge lit up Bellevue for 10 goals, the most goals allowed by the Wolverines this season.  Looking to avenge the poor defensive performance, Bellevue cracked down on Southridge's drives and held Southridge to just three goals to earn an 8-3 victory.  Sophomores Jake VanWolvelaere and Matt McKaig scored two goals each, and Hayden Goudy added four steals.

Bellevue vs Curtis
The first game of the quarterfinal round pitted Bellevue against Curtis.  Despite playing tough defense for the majority of the half, a handful of mental lapses led to three Bellevue ejections and three Curtis goals, and Bellevue entered halftime with a 5-3 lead.  In the second half, Bellevue cut down on its ejections and contained the Curtis attack and ultimately prevailed 10-4.  Senior Dan Ellis had five blocks, and all four goals allowed came on man-down situations.  Senior captain Riley Smith led Bellevue with three goals and standout defense at the two-meter position.

Bellevue vs Westview
In its second quarterfinal round game, Bellevue used a 6-2 second quarter to defeat Westview, 14-8.  Chase Middlesworth led the Wolverines with six goals.  Justin Dellinger tied a school record with nine steals.

Bellevue vs Wilson
In the semi-finals, Bellevue played Wilson, another in-state foe.  Both teams traded goals in the first quarter.  Bellevue outscored Wilson 3-1 in the second quarter, but Wilson responded by outscoring Bellevue 3-1 in the third quarter.  Entering the fourth-quarter nursing a one-goal lead, it looked like a nail-biting finish was inevitable.  However, Bellevue exploded for six unanswered fourth-quarter goals to escape with a 14-8 victory.  Doug Oakley led the Wolverines with two goals and three ejections drawn.  Justin Dellinger added two goals and three assists.  9 of 13 Wolverines scored in the win, including all six starters.

Bellevue vs Newberg
The championship game saw the Wolverines matched up against tournament host and defending Oregon state champion Newberg High School.  During their first six games, Newberg had scored 15 goals or more thanks to an aggressive counterattack.  Thus, Bellevue knew that the key to slowing Newberg was containing their counter.  And in the first quarter, they were largely successful.  Bellevue finished the first quarter trailing 3-2, despite a missed 5-meter penalty shot.  In the second quarter, Newberg took advantage of four man-ups to build a 6-3 halftime lead.  Undaunted, Bellevue continued to battle throughout the third period.  Unfortunately, lazy perimeter defense led to several ejections, and by the end of the third quarter, three of six starters had three ejections and Bellevue faced an insurmountable deficit.  Hayden Goudy led the Wolverines with five ejections drawn and three steals in the loss.

Bellevue (15-3) returns to action on Thursday, 4:30pm, against Rogers High School at Rogers Pool.
