Senior Riley Smith got Bellevue off to a quick start, burying an outside shot in the upper corner on the Wolverines' first possession. On Bellevue's next possession, Oakley drew an ejection on a counterattack, and Smith found the back of the net on the ensuing man-up for his second goal of the game.
Facing an early 2-0 deficit, Roosevelt's Mike Hoff answered with two goals to even the game at 2-2. After a half-court Roosevelt shot caught Bellevue goalie Dan Ellis off-guard, Bellevue found itself down 3-2.
The Wolverines evened the score at 3-3 after Oakley scored on a 5-meter penalty shot drawn by senior Justin Dellinger. Oakley added another goal on a counter attack, and Bellevue ended the first quarter with a 4-3 lead.
In the second quarter, Roosevelt tied the game at 4-4 on a rebound goal. On the next possession, senior Hayden Goudy drew an ejection a two-meters, and McKaig scored the first of his four goals to put the Wolverines up by one. However, Roosevelt quickly answered to tie the score at 5-5.
Peter Linton scored on Bellevue's next possession to put the Wolverines back on top, 6-5. Linton's goal proved to be the momentum swing that Bellevue needed, as McKaig scored two goals -- one on a man-up and one out of hole set -- to put Bellevue up 8-5 at half.
The third period saw both teams trade goals, and Bellevue entered the fourth quarter with a 10-7 lead.
After Hoff scored on a 5-meter penalty shot to narrow Bellevue's lead to 10-8, it looked like the two squads were headed to a nail-biting finish. But just as Roosevelt got within striking distance, Bellevue reeled off four unanswered goals to put the game away. Sophomore Jake VanWolvelaere scored on an outside shot; Oakley scored on a counter; Linton scored off a steal and assist from senior Andrew Barrett; and McKaig scored on an outside shot.
Bellevue (18-3) hosts Newport at 4:00pm on Friday at Edgebrook Pool in its Homecoming Game.
