10/16/09 -- Senior goalie Dan Ellis had eight blocks, including one on a 5-meter penalty shot, as the Bellevue Wolverines defeated Newport, 12-6, in league-play on Friday afternoon.  Ellis added one steal and two assists in the victory.

The Wolverines jumped out to an early 4-1 first-quarter lead behind the offense of junior Chase Middlesworth.  On Bellevue's first possession, Middlesworth scored on an outside shot.  On Bellevue's second possession, senior Doug Oakley drew an ejection at two-meters, and Middlesworth scored on the man-up advantage.  Senior Hayden Goudy tallied Bellevue's third goal of the period on a rebound off a shot from sophomore Matt McKaig.  Senior Justin Dellinger rounded out Bellevue's first-quarter scoring with an outside shot after senior Riley Smith drew an ejection at two-meters.

In the second period, Bellevue struck first with a goal by senior Peter Linton.  Smith scored the game's next goal on a man-up advantage after Linton drew an ejection at two-meters.  Up 6-1, it looked like Bellevue was going to roll to an easy victory.  However, Newport answered with two goals late in the period -- one on a man-up and one on an outside shot -- to draw to within three at 6-3.

Newport carried their momentum into the third period and scored on consecutive possessions to cut Bellevue's lead to one goal.  After squandering a 6-1 lead, Bellevue was finally able to stop the bleeding.  Matt McKaig scored on a man-up advantage drawn by Doug Oakley.  A minute later, Justin Dellinger scored off a cross-pass from Riley Smith, and Bellevue's lead was back to three.  Newport responded with a 5-meter penalty goal after Bellevue was called for an off-the-bottom field block.  But Middlesworth answered with a counter-attack goal to bring the score to 9-6.

Middlesworth scored his fourth goal of the game in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter to put Bellevue ahead 10-6.  Doug Oakley scored off an overpass from Matt McKaig to make it 11-6, and McKaig scored on a counter-attack to end the game at 12-6.  Bellevue's defense held Newport scoreless in the period and Dan Ellis had a handful of key blocks, including a 5-meter penalty shot block on Newport's Alex Keith.

Bellevue (19-3) travels to San Diego on Wednesday to take on 32 of the top teams in Southern California.
