First-half advantage holds up for Notre Dame Prep.

Notre Dame Prep gained a seven-point lead in the opening half and made it stand up at game�s end, defeating Roland Park Country, 35-29, in IAAM A-Conference basketball action, in Towson.

NDP (3-5, 5-8) is currently battling St. Paul�s School for Girls for the fourth spot in the A�s X Division, as both trail St. Frances, McDonogh and Spalding in the standings.

RPCS (1-6, 3-12) is in a similar battle with Institute of Notre Dame on the other side, as both jockey for the fourth spot in the Y Division behind Seton Keough, Mercy and Towson Catholic.

In yesterday�s game, the host Blazers gained control in the first half. taking a 19-12 lead into intermission.

�We opened a 10-point lead, 28-18, early in the second half,� said Blazer Coach Kate Campitelli. �But Ro;and Park cut it to 28-25 by the end of the third. It was a three to seven point margin throughout the fourth quarter, but we were able to play good �D� down the stretch to hold them.�

Senior forward Lauren Mazzone led NDP in the scoring column with 11 points, while sophomore Meghan Helm had nine and junior guard Kelsi Bozel added eight. Senior guard Brett Cullen played a solid all-around game. She scored just three and added three assists, but her important contribution came more on the defensive end, where she collared six rebounds and had an eye-popping nine steals.

Roland Park was led by junior guard Jackie Kell with 11 points. �Kell really helped them by going 9-12 from the free throw line,� added Campitelli. �And we helped them by going 5-16 as a team from the line.�

NDP faces a tough test on Friday, playing host to Mercy, and then another battle next week at McDonogh on Wednesday. Roland Park looks to get a win on Monday when the Reds face St. Mary�s, that game to be played at NDP since Roland Park is without a home gym this season.
