Brett Ullman's 29-yard field goal was the difference for Perry Hall, lifting the Gators to a 17-14, Baltimore County Class 4A-3A League victory over the visiting Millers on Friday night.
Milford Mill (5-5 overall, 5-4 league) then missed a chance to tie when its 25-yard field goal attempt failed.
"Then we ran four minutes off the clock," said coach Brian Nagle, an assistant to Bob Hruz. "Milford got ball back and we stopped them four straight plays for a turnover on downs and we took a knee twice and won."
Ullman also kicked two extra points, and 6-foot-5, 200-pound second-team All-Metro Dave Stinebaugh caught his 12th receiving TD and raised his two-year TD total to 29 with a 22-yard catch from Mike Lang, who also rushed for a 1-yard TD.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Millers were within, 14-7, at halftime following a 1-yard scoring run by 6-3, 200-pound Kevin Fulton, and Miguel Bernard's first of two extra point kicks.
Joe Coates' 24-yard run tied the game, but Ullman won it for the Gators (9-1, 8-1).
Perry Hall entered the game in second place in its Class 4A North Region, trailing Linganore (9-0) of Frederick County, and ahead of North Carroll of Frederick County and Thomas Johnson of Frederick County.
"We were playing for at least the No. 2 seed in our region, and Milford was playing to get in the playoffs," said coach Brian Nagle, an assistant to Bob Hruz. "We have now secured at least the No. 2 seed."
North Carroll (8-2) routed Westminster, 47-7, to clinch one of the four regional playoff seeds and to complete that program's
best season since 1978, when the Panthers won 10 games, the Monocacy Valley Athletic League title and reached the playoffs
for the only time in school history.
The Gators could go as high as No. 1 if Linganore loses.
Linganore (9-0) plays host to Urbana (5-4) on Saturday in a clash of Frederick County teams, and Thomas Johnson (7-2) visits
Frederick (7-2) in another clash of Frederick County squads.
"If Thomas Johnson beats Frederick tomorrow, it's possible they could jump North Carroll for the No. 3 seed," Nagle said.
Milford Mill entered the game trailing Hereford (10-0), Catonsville (7-3) and Franklin (6-4) in the chase for one of the top four regional playoff seeds in the Class 3A North.
In close proximity to the Millers was Mervo (6-4) of Baltimore City, which routed Reginal Lewis, 40-0, on Friday night.
The Millers and the Mustangs are in a close race for the fourth and final spot.
Perry Hall's Nelson Knight rushed for 183 yard, raising his season rushing totals to 1,261 yards with 10 touchdowns. Stinebaugh had three receptions for 61 yards, raising his season totals to 49 receptions for 929 yards and 12 TDs.
Lang was 9-for-18 passing for 160 yards.
On the year, Stinebaugh has rushed for one touchdown, passed for another, and returned one of his three interceptions for still another score, totaling 15 TDs on the year.
