Little Silver, NJ- Red Bank Reginald’s home opener took place on Friday night. Emphasis on night. This game was the first official night game in RBR history. The stage was set, but apparently not the game plan. The Bucs fell short to the Saint John Vianney Lancers 21-7 in a game that played in front of an energetic crowd despite the weather. The rain was falling, but at the beginning it didn’t look as if it would stop the Bucs, when they struck first in the second quarter with a short touchdown run by tailback Tylar Lesbirel. This touchdown and three forced fumbles by the Bucs was what lead the two teams to half time with RBR leading 7-0. The first half was RBR’s, but the second half was a far different story. The Lancers turned it on starting the scoring in the half with a 10 yard+ touchdown run by running back Charles Davis making the score 7-6 RBR after the Lancers missed the extra point. Though the score was tight the Bucs were still pretty confident with their lead hoping to build on it in the 4th quarter, but it was the Lancers that added some extra points. Running back Chris Mayo scored on a 1 yard rushing touchdown and the Lancers converted the two-point conversion with a pass to Davis to give SJV a 14-7 lead. The Lancers followed this up with another 1-yard touchdown run by Davis. After the extra point the score was 21-7. The Bucs had one more chance to comeback, but this their drive was halted by an interception thrown with a little more than 2 minutes left in the game. The Lancers ran out the rest of the game clock and wrapped up a victory on a historic night in Red Bank. What sparked such an impressive comeback in the second half by the Lancers were the encouraging words of their coach John Amabile. Amabile made it clear to his players that not much worse could happen after giving up three fumbles, so his players buckled down and in Amabile’s words “took their heads out of their rears” to win their season opener and hopefully have this momentum carry on out through the season.
