After a sluggish first quarter, the Wootton boy’s lacrosse coaches loudly prodded their team for six goals in the second quarter.

Ask and the Patriots will deliver.

Wootton pulled away with six second-quarter goals and held off a second-half Bethesda-Chevy Chase push for a 15-9 win in a rematch of last year’s 4A West region finals Thursday night.

Wootton (5-0) showed just how quick it can put points on the board, especially in transition. It’s easy when anyone on the field, including the defenders, can score.

Of Wootton’s nine first-half goals, two were scored by long-stick defenders – the first of the game by Mark Jutkowitz and another by Reid Shepard. Four other goals were assisted by long-poles. Jutkowitz had two first-half assists while Shepard and Matt Canter each had one.

Faced scoring six goals in the second quarter, Wootton got its first from Mike Cresham in just 26 seconds. Max Romm, Shepard, Chris Doran and Jeff Zifrony each added a goal and Cresham fulfilled the challenge with a rifled shot with 0.9 seconds remaining in the half.

Wootton went into halftime with a 9-3 lead after leading just 3-1 at the end of the first quarter.

Bethesda-Chevy Chase (1-4) rallied by scoring four of the first five goals in the second half to make the score 10-7. Barons senior Chris Pappalardo was the catalyst yet again as he scored three second-half goals and five overall.

Wootton pulled away, however, with four straight goals that all but sealed the game. Midfielder Matt Greenblatt and attackman Tim Lenardo each netted two second-half goals while Cresham and Gordie Gold each notched one.
