Thursday, May 22 -- The boys varsity tennis team completed its run by
defeating Choate Rosemary Hall in The New England “Class A” Championship. The
match started on the 18th of May at Choate in Wallingford, Conn., but was
abandoned due to rain after only the doubles portion of the format had been
completed. Hotchkiss sat poised with the doubles point in hand until Thursday,
May 22, when the match continued, this time at the Taft School in Watertown,
Conn., with the singles portion of the format to determine the champion. Rain
threatened to scrub the match once again but the storm front past and the
Bearcats wasted little time in clinching their first New England crown in over
eight years.
The Bearcat scoring was as follows:
- The #1 doubles team of Greg Maxson ’08 and Robert Lightbourn ’10 defeated
Max Mullen and Brian McDermott (8-4).
- The #2 doubles team of J.R. Thornton ’10 and Alex Dermody-McKeen ’08
defeated Chip Lebovitz and Jamie Greenwald (8-2).
- J.R. Thornton at #1 singles defeated Max Mullen 6-3, 6-1.
- Greg Maxson at #2 singles defeated Christophe Lirola 6-3, 6-4.
- Robert Lightbourn at #3 singles defeated Chip Libovitz 6-4, 6-2 to secure
the victory for Hotchkiss.
The team collected four titles this
season on their way to posting a 13-2 regular season record: the Kingswood
Oxford Invitational Championship, the Southern New England Tennis League
Championship, the Founders League Championship, and the “Class A” New England
Championship.
