It was warm and the vog was still around at Mililani High School, but the finals didn't start until 3pm on Saturday so the athletes had a bit of a respite.

On the girls side, it was the Kamehameha-Kapalama Warriors who unseated four time defending champion Buffanblu by a score of 59.25 to 55.75. Kahuku was a bit back at 46.

The Kamehameha-Kapalama girls scored big in the throwing events. In the discus they scored 8 points (Kasandra Vegas - 2nd) and 10 points for the shot put (Charmaine Mokiao - 1st). It wasn't only the throwing events, though, as the Warriors also scored in the high jump (Kanani Herring - 1st, Hailey Kauhane - tie for 5th), pole vault (Amy Bumatai - 5th), 100 meters (Hailey Kauhane - 6th), 4x100 (Kelli Aken-Pagdilao, Shawna Kinilau, Traci Nakamura, and Hailey Kauhane - 5th), 400 (Ashlee Jimenez - 3rd), 300 hurdles (Alana Meditz - 2nd), 200 (Hailey Kauhane - 4th), and the 4x400 (Noe Mikami, Courtney Honda, Ashlee Jimenez, Alana Meditz - 2nd) to show the great depth needed to win a state championship and beat another deep team like the Buffanblu who were a very close second.

The strangest race for me was the girls 1500. Bailey Massenburg was the favorite going in. There were no trials for this event as many girls decided to scratch on Friday so I hadn't seen many of these girls run before. They went out very slowly and didn't pick it up until the last lap which turned into an all out sprint. I was surprised that Bailey didn't push the pace as I felt by taking it out slowly she was keeping everyone else in the race. As it turned out, though, no one pushed her and she was able to win in the last lap sprint. This set her up well for the 800 to the chagrin of the rest of the 800 field who were looking for Bailey to be tired from the 1500. Bailey then won the 800 in a fast 2:19.21. She also had enough for a fast 3000 (10:40.75) good enough for a 2nd place behind an awesome performance from Kaiser's Sarah Clapp (10:30.82).

The Punahou boys successfully defended their title giving retiring head coach Mike Pavich a wonderful going away present. Radford made it close, though, scoring 52 points to the Buffanblu's 55.75.

Both Punahou and Radford had to deal with injuries suffered in the trials to some of their best runners. But, in the end, just like last year when they overcame a serious injury in the trials, the tremendous depth of the Buffanblu was enough for them to defend their title. Abe Markowitz got the team off to a great start by taking 2nd place in both the discus (157-02) and the shot put (53-01). This was good for 16 points. In the long jump, Shane Wo took 5th (21-01) and Matt Yim was 6th (21-00.25). John Hagar placed 5th with a jump of 42-09.75. In the high jump it was John Hagar placing 4th (6-01) and Matt Yamane tying for 5th (5-11). Dave Walden took a 5th in the pole vault (13-09) while an injured Zach Coronas gutted out a 3rd in the 100 (11.07). Zach then came back to win the 400 in a time of 49.56. In the 800 the Puns had two scorers as Tobie Reeuwijk took 3rd (1:59.45) and Ryan Nakasone placed fifth (2:00.27). In the last race of the day, the 4x400, th! e Puns placed 4th in a time of 3:25.79 (Ben Strand, Jeff Pedrina, Tobie Reeuwijk and Chris Chang).

Outstanding individual event performances were recorded by the Radford Boys 400m Relay team as they set a meet record of 42.53. Radford senior Chris Rainey set a meet record of 21.89 in the 200m while Kaiser's Dawson Vorderbruegge set a meet record of 8:58.14 in the 3000m.

Double wins were recorded by junior Bailey Massenburg in the 800 and 1500. She also took a second in the 3000. Maryknoll senior Javen Correia continued his dominance in the hurdles, winning both the 110 (14.60) and the 300 (39.5). Chris Rainey (Radford) won both the 100 (10.89) and the 200 (21.89).

Zhane Santiago, Kahuku freshman, tripled in the hurdles (100-15.12, 300 - 46.22) and the triple jump (35-07).

Congratulations to all the athletes and the organizers who did a great job and put on a wonderful show!
