SMR’s Varsity Lacrosse Team Adopts Army Unit in Iraq

Each year the SMR’s Varsity Lacrosse Team chooses a service project. This year after some research and thought they decided to send items to a unit of soldiers serving in Iraq.  They went thought an organization called “A Soldiers Wish List” to find a unit of soldiers that had some wishes that they could fulfill.  The perfect match came in just a few days after their inquiry….the email read

1SG Viktor Vaupel

E Co 3-159 ARB

APO AE 09391

Service: Army

Hometown and State: Colo Spgs, Colorado

Email: viktor.vaupel@us.army.mil

OK to give email address to adopter?: Yes

Gender: Male

Expected month home: November 2009

Wish List: I am a Company 1SG - my Soldiers and I don't get much down time, but when we do we like to play Softball.

A few of my Soldiers have scrapped together some items but it is not enough for us to play a full game with. If anyone could help I would really appreciate it.

Where Stationed: Iraq

Once we got that information we put the word out to all members of the team that we needed specific softball equipment and within days the boys donated:

  • 17 softball gloves
  • 8 bats
  • lots of softballs (I didn't count them)
  • a set of bases
  • 2 dozen water bottles with carriers
  • 50 shirts (25 red, 25 blue with the army logo and a flag on the back)
  • and money to pay for shipping and the shirts

They got together last Sunday afternoon and packed the boxes and each player wrote letters to the four soldiers in the unit.  The letters and equipment along with a SMR Lacrosse Jersey and team photo were shipped this week and hopefully 1SGViktor Vaupel’s Army unit will be playing softball soon.
