Chargers want to talk about defense more than their offense
LINDEN - After scoring 104 points in two games, one might think the talk in the locker room would be about the offense.

But that is not the case after North Montgomery's 56-24 blasting of Seeger which in on the heels of last week's 50-12 rout of Benton Central. The Charger players wanted to talk about their defense.

The Chargers intercepted Seeger junior quarterback Scott Moore three times and held the Patriots star fullback Ethan Cronk to 86 yards.

What made the North Montgomery players most excited was that the Cronk, who had 253 yards rushing last week against Rockville, only had 10 yards at halftime.

Seeger received the opening kickoff and after three plays found themselves facing a fourth down with less than one yard to go on their own 32-yard-line.

North Montgomery's defense stopped Cronk for a loss of one yard and scored in just two plays when senior Isaac McGaughey caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Clayton Dale.

"Our goal to start the game was to get a three-and-out," McGaughey said. "When we stopped them on the fourth-down play we sent a message to Cronk, who is very good."

Chargers' coach Charley German also said the big defensive stand early set the tone for the entire game.

"Our defense really established themselves on the fourth down play," he said. "I thought we were the most aggressive defense on the field for the entire game."

McGaughey and his defensive teammates limited Seeger (0-2) to just 18 yards in the first quarter. McGaughey also had a first quarter interception.

McGaughey was also busy on offense. The senior scored three times in the opening quarter.

Besides the pass for the game's first touchdown, he had scoring runs of 39 and 37 yards.

McGaughey would add another score in the third quarter with a 37-yard jaunt and finished with nine carries for 151 yards.

He credited his teammates for his big night.

"Our line did a great job blocking tonight," McGaughey said. "I had big holes to run through and I was lucky enough to get the ball into the end zone."

North Montgomery's (2-0) offense continues to share the wealth as six players scored points.

Senior lineman Chuck Logan said the team's cohesiveness is the reason for the early season success.

"We are playing as one team right now," he said.

Logan got the crowd excited in the fourth quarter when the 6-foot, 2-inch 230-pound defensive lineman intercepted his second pass of the season.

He returned the ball 58 yards before running out of gas and being brought down by two Patriots' defenders on the four-yard line.

"Chuck is always around the ball," German said. "He got everyone excited when he almost scored. It was one of the many great plays by our defense tonight."

The Chargers will now get ready for next week's big county and Sagamore Athletic Conference matchup at Southmont next Friday.

"We are a cohesive unit and playing on the same page," German said. "It won't be hard to get up for Southmont because we know they will play very hard and it is at their place
