Breakdown: St. Joe is coming off one of its strongest seasons in nearly a decade, after ralling over the second half of last season to claim a share of the MIAA A Conference title and third-year head coach Chip Armstrong is seeking to keep the momentum building in Irvington.
Part of the excitement for 2008 is a brand new home stadium with a turf field. The Gaels spent the entire 2007 season on the road with the exception of one home game at Arbutus Middle School and a homecoming contest hosted at Johns Hopkins University.
As usual, St. Joe took on a tough non-conference schedule last fall, including DC power Good Counsel and a trip to the midwest to face Ohio powerhouse Steubenville. This led to a 2-4 start, but the Gaels turned everything around on a rainy night at Hopkins, as they routed previously unbeaten Loyola, 24-7, before more than 2,000 fans, in a DigitalSports Primetime Pigskin Series game.
From that club, the defense returns eight players, including Leroy Bradford who anchors the linebacking corps.
The Gaels, however, will have to overcome the loss of quarterback Chris Collins, who has transferred to Franklin, and the graduation of the team's entiring receiving corps.
The Gaels will be part of the Primetime Pigskin Series once again in 2008 as the hlep kick things off with a visit to B Conference power Archbishop Spalding on September 5.
