Springbrook’s girls lacrosse players thought Friday’s game against Northwood was a good chance at getting a win this season.

Northwood has just one win on the season and Springbrook’s junior varsity team won its first game of the season just before – a good omen for the Blue Devils.

But the girls didn’t want to get ahead of themselves.

“We didn’t want to get too cocky,” senior Justine Sery said with a laugh.

Springbrook finished it off and celebrated its first win of the year, 12-6, with an ice bath for Coach Melissa Seesz.

Sery and Rachelle Chan are the Blue Devils’ only two seniors left over from last year’s team that notched two wins. The team only has two juniors as well. That means there’s 14 sophomores and two freshman.

Thus, it’s of course been a learning process throughout the season for Springbrook.

“We’ve improved a tremendous amount,” a wet Coach Seesz said. “It’s not the same team we started with.”

Springbrook scored the game’s first seven goals and notched a shutout in the first half for the first time this season. Sophomores Courtney Lee and Adrianna Choi notched two first-half goals.

Freshman Micah Brown flashed her speed in scoring perhaps the game’s prettiest goals.

“The underclassmen are stepping up and playing really well so we’re proud of them,” Chan said.

“In a couple years they’ll be amazing," Sery added.

Northwood rallied a bit in the second half on four goals by senior center Brittany Spear and a goal each from senior midfielder Jenny Thompson and senior attacker Lyle Andrews.

But Springbrook turned to its pair of seniors, who were honored for their achievements before the game. Sery scored two goals in the second half and three total while adding an assist. Chan scored one second half goal and was essentially in controlling possession for the Blue Devils.

“We’ve improved a lot this season so it’s good to get one,” Chan said. “It’s amazing. Finally.”
