Staff report
The final
two weeks were not their most impressive outings, but the Pike Red Devils still
won the outright Conference Indiana championship. Moreover, the Devils went
undefeated in league play at 7-0. They capped that feat with a 17-7 victory
over Franklin Central Friday night.
There was a
major logjam for second place in the conference. That was created by Lawrence Central’s 42-14
upset blasting of Bloomington North in the regular season finale. Meanwhile
Southport toppled Columbus North and moved into the mix. The result of these
surprises was a three way tie at 4-3 among Bloomington North, Columbus North,
and Southport.
Perry
Meridian avoided a winless regular season by upsetting Bloomington South 17-14.
The victory comes on the heels of pushing Pike to the brink in a 13-10 overtime
loss the week before. The Falcons have a good shot at two in a row, having
drawn a vulnerable Richmond team in the opening round of sectional play.
Most of the
conference will face much stiffer competition in the first round of the
tourney. Columbus North has to battle city rival and #2 ranked Columbus east.
Lawrence central has a rematch with Lawrence North, and Franklin Central has
the dubious task of facing Warren Central.
