St. Joseph's Senior grappler, Steven Fowler, had many adjectives to describe his Saturday in Greensboro, NC competing in the national Super 32 wrestling tournament: tough, exciting, huge, learning experience (to name a few). Fowler was one of 71 young men from across the USA competing in the 160 lb. weight class.
In the first round of the competition, Fowler faced off against a tough opponent in Adam Miller (Sparta-MI). After an even two periods, Fowler started the third period down only 1-0. Unfortunatly, things went downhill from there, with Fowler losing 11-5. Steven took solice in the fact the Miller, a Division 1 college prospect, went on to finish 2nd in the event.
After a Bye in the first consolation round, Fowler went up against a local, Nick McClelland (Knightdale-NC). After a tough battle, Fowler came away victorious, 2-1. This first victory on the day propelled Fowler into the next round were he went head to head with Aaron Benwell (Lakeland-VA). Much like his previous match, it was close, but Fowler came away with a win once again with a score of 4-2.
In his fourth match of the day, Fowler step on the mat against Thad Klenovich (Springstead-FL). Fowler quickly got into (and out of) trouble, falling behind 5-0. Steven battled back, but could not overcome the early deficit, falling 9-4. This second loss put an end to Fowler's day and tournament, giving him an overall record of 2-2 in the tournament.
Other facts to note from the Super 32 tournament: The only South Carolina wrestler in the 160 lb. class to make it further in the tournament than Fowler was Alex Morals of Lexington (he also went 2-2, but got a bye in the first round). The only South Carolina wrestler to place in the top 8 of any weight class was Patrick Quinn of Grey's Creek (285 lb. weight class).
