Coach Mike Bordick will take his Boys' Latin baseball team to Ripken Stadium on Wednesday afternoon where the Lakers will
play for the MIAA B Conference Championship, as they advanced to the finals for the second consecutive year, on the strength of a 7-6 win over
St. Vincent Pallotti, in the Winners' Bracket Final on Saturday.
Last year when BL reached the final, it was a winner take all championship game, between the winners of two double-elimination flights, and St. Mary's defeated the top-seeded Lakers. This year, the tournament was narrowed down to one double-elimination field and the Lakers will go to Ripken as the only remaining unbeaten team in the tournament. This means they have two chances to win one game and capture the title. Their opponent will need two wins to take the championship.
Three teams are still vying to be that opponent.
On Saturday morning, Park routed Friends, 8-0, in a contest played at Calvert Hall, and St. Mary's edged Chapelgate Christian, 1-0. This matches these two teams against each other, in an elimination contest this afternoon at Park. The winner of that game will go to Panther Park in Laurel, tomorrow, to challenge Pallotti for the second spot in the finals.
In its win over Chapelgate, St. Mary's received an outstanding effort from senior right-hander Tony Cerverizzo, who pitched a two-hitter and struck out 12 in the shut out effort. It was a performance the Saints absolutely had to have because the Yellowjackets countered with an equally impressive pitching effort from Matt Siggins, who also yielded just two hits while fanning 15.
The game's only run came in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Jordan King.
Wednesday's final in Aberdeen is scheduled to begin at 4:00 pm and it will be followed, at 7:00 pm, by the A Conference final. The "if necessary" game, for both conferences will be held on Thursday at Ripken Stadium, if needed.
The A Conference final features three time defending champion Calvert Hall, as the only remaining undefeated team in that tournament. The Cardinals will meet the winner of today's final elimination game between Archbishop Spalding and Archbishop Curley, being played at Spalding's Cavalier Field (4:00 pm).
