SPOOKY DAY IN A-CONFERENCE FIELD HOCKEY

Top three teams all lose on Tuesday - and all by same score

By Mike Buchanan

The planets were aligned just right. Or everything came together as in the perfect storm. Or, as one coach tried to explain it, ??Is there a full moon tonight??

Something was up on Tuesday this week in the IAAM??s field hockey A-Conference. Not one, not two, but all three top teams in the league lost ?? on the same day.

No. 3 Bryn Mawr, tied for first-place, fell to fourth-place St. Mary??s. And No. 6 Garrison Forest also went down via the upset. The Grizzlies, also tied for first, lost to sixth-place Roland Park Country. Why not make it a trifecta, as No. 16 and third-place Archbishop Spalding also succumbed, losing to seventh-place St. Paul??s School for Girls.

All three upset victims had previously beaten the ??up-setters? in their first league meeting.

But all three lost the second time around.

It gets even better: all three games were decided by the same 2-1 score. Start the spooky background music.

Wait, one more crazy detail: all three winning teams had one player score both goals. St. Mary??s Caroline Cochran, Roland Park??s Laura Simanski and St. Paul??s SfG??s Hayward Sawers all hit the nets twice in the upset wins.

Bryn Mawr and Garrison both entered the day at 9-1-1, with a share of the lead, both just maybe peaking ahead on the schedule to next Tuesday, October 23, when the front-runners meet for the second time, after tying 0-0 in their first match.

With BMS??s Jeanette Budzik and GFS??s Traci Davis both being long-time, experienced coaches, it??s a safe bet that both teams were well-prepared as usual, cautioned to take each game one by one, mindful of the ever-present upset being a possibility around any and every corner.

But it??s not always easy to control the mind-set of a group of 20-some high school girls.  Whether any Mawrtians or Grizzlies were sneaking a peak ahead at next week??s big game is anyone??s guess.  Regardless, both co-leaders went down to defeat.

Archbishop Spalding Coach Leslee Brady offered her explanation, asking ??Is there a full moon tonight??

St. Mary??s Coach Ann Andrews countered with the most likely reason ?? league parity.

??This year is the closest it??s ever been. You can??t take any game for granted, the competition is so close. All four higher seeded teams could lose in the first round of the playoffs, it really is that close,? said Andrews, in her sixth season at St. Mary??s.

Bryn Mawr defeated St. Mary??s in the first meeting, 1-0, but the Saints had home-turf advantage this time. Cochran, as mentioned, scored both goals, one in each half, and Haydon Judge assisted on both.

Anne Callahan had a huge game in goal, turning away 14 shots.  Abby Bisbee had two saves for Bryn Mawr, and Peyton Hawkins scored the lone BMS goal.

As evidenced by the huge difference in saves, Bryn Mawr had the upper hand in offensive possession and scoring chances, a huge disparity that somehow resulted in a loss.

Said Andrews, of her opponent, ??They are so incredibly talented. They had far more shots and had 20 corners to our three. We got lucky on our shots. We got good shot placement on the few chances we had. We took advantage of the limited opportunities."

She went on to add, ??With Bryn Mawr so strong attacking, you have to give credit to our defense. Callahan was superb in goal, but so were her defenders. Elliana Oppenshaw, Claire Olechowski, Kristine Kessler and Melissa Manley really stepped up to be able to hold them to one goal.?

Bryn Mawr dropped to 9-2-1, while St. Mary??s improved to 6-5-1.

Meanwhile, Garrison had beaten Roland Park Country, 2-1, in their earlier match. The Reds turned the tables ?? and the score ?? winning by that spooky 2-1 score, in Owings Mills.

While Simanski scored both Roland Park goals, Liz Hamilton also got both assists. The teams were tied 1-1 at the half. Bailey Reeves notched 13 saves, while Emily Cain had four for GFS.

Garrison Forest stays glued to Bryn Mawr at 9-2-1, and RPCS went to 4-8.

In Brooklandville, the third upset took place as St. Paul??s SfG downed Spalding. The host Gators took a 1-0 lead into the break and traded second-half goals. Kristen Goldberg and Brianna Elliott assisted on the two Sawers goals. Kelly Muedeking made five saves for SPSG, while Bridget Harner had two for Spalding. Abby Lynch scored the Cavalier goal.

Spalding is no stranger to upsets, having handed both Bryn Mawr AND Garrison Forest their lone loss prior to Tuesday. The Cavaliers fell to 7-5, while the upstart Gators improved to 3-7-2.

It probably makes no sense taking a peak at the standings, with each team having two or three games left - anything could happen, as we already know.

With the clock winding down toward the bewitching hour, Halloween fast approaching, black cats soon to be walking under ladders - and more games to be played - the final standings could be anyone??s guess.
