AFS 8, GFS 1
The Roos won convincingly over the GFS Tigers for their first win in the League and second overall. The game was much closer than the final score indicates. The score was 2-1 going into the fifth inning, and either team had a chance to pull it out.
The AFS offense sputtered against 3 GFS pitchers who kept the AFS batters off balance. The Roos did score in the second on two walks, two passed balls, and an RBI ground out by Emily Delany. In the fourth the Roos posted a second run on a single and stolen base by Kelsey Clark and a RBI double by Katie Gross.
Starting pitcher Saroja Schwager looked sharp and got easy outs in the first and second innings. Then in the third, she gave up two walks, only to get out of the jam with two strikeouts and an infield out. In the fourth, a batter walked, stole second and came all the way round to score when the throw from the AFS catcher hit her and careened into left field. It was an unearned run without a hit.
Kelsey Clark then subbed for Schwager.
Meanwhile, a close game opened up when the Roos offense scored 4 runs in the sixth. Walks, a fielder’s choice, and a clutch RBI double by senior Becca Hanssens-Reed scored 2. The fourth run scored on a hit by Cara Liuzzi to make it 6-1.
In the seventh, the Roos scored two more with a combination of walks and a hit by Clark. In the circle, Clark gave up two hits and one walk along with 5 K’s to hold GFS to that single run.
