HCC CoordinatorWEST LAFAYETTE – Avon’s top-ranked boys golf team proved to the entire Hoosier Crossroads Conference on May 12th during the 2008 HCC Tournament that they belong atop the polls.
The Orioles fired a team total 3-over par 191 on the par-72, 6800 yard Coyote Crossing layout to easily out-distance second-place Zionsville (309) by 18 strokes. Lafayette Jefferson finished third with a score of 310.

“291 you know for any team is great, especially with this (being) one of the toughest conferences in my opinion in the state,” said Avon Coach Brent Sailor. “The course was setup extremely nice. Some holes were a little bit easier than others, and some were setup real hard, the pin placements were testing. You’ll take 291 any day of the week.”
Avon also took first-place in the individual competition, as freshman Patrick Rodgers shot a two-under par 70 to edge teammate Andrew Wegeng by one stroke for medalist honors.
“Patrick’s played a lot of tournament golf,” said Sailor. “He’s probably one of our most experienced players even as a freshman. He’s played a lot of courses, he’s played a lot of good players, and he’s played with a lot of older mature players. I think that’s were his maturity and course management kind of supersedes some of the other players.”
Also contributing to Avon’s 291 total were: Ronnie Harris, who shot a 73 which was good for 4th-place and Ryan Whitt, who carded a 77 and finished in a tie for 9th-place.
