It was a terrific two-day event at the 72nd Annual IHSAA Boys Golf State Finals held
June 10-11 at The Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin for the Hoosier Crossroads Conference, as four conference schools finished in the top-7 of the final team standings.
Top-ranked Avon led the way with a state runner-up finish. #6 Lafayette Jefferson finished in third place, #13 Hamilton Southeastern was fifth, and #15 Noblesville came home in seventh place.
"Our game plan was to come out and control one thing and that was themselves," said Avon Coach Brent Sailor of his team's performance. "You can't control what another team is going to do. We did nothing out of the unordinary. For the most part we shot two-day what we've done all year long."
"Hats of to Cathedral they played a superb round yesterday (first round) and they backed it up today," said Sailor. "My boys, there is nothing to take away from them. They had a great year, with this being their only defeat all season long."
Avon freshman Patrick Rodgers finished in four-way tie for fifth place and posted the conference's top individual performance. Rodgers, who was the medalist at the 2008 HCC Championships, shot an even-par, 140, at the State Finals.
"He's just done a real steady even keel pace as a freshman," said Sailor of Rodgers' first season with the Orioles. "(We) kind of expected a lot. But with a freshman you know they're going to make freshman mistakes, and he just didn't."
