And
then there were two. Catholic's 9-6 win over Baltimore Lutheran,
yesterday in Towson, left only two unbeaten teams in the "C" Conference
lacrosse race. The host Saints began the day unbeaten, but dropped to
3-1 with the loss. Catholic, meanwhile, improved to 5-0 and moved a
half game ahead of Beth Tfiloh, the other "C" unbeaten, at 4-0.
The Cubs rolled to a 5-1 lead at the
half and looked ready to blow this one wide open. But the Saints staged
a second-half rally and actually outscored Catholic, 5-4, but it was
not enough in the end. Senior Stephanie Parker and sophomore Allison
Terry scored three goals each, while Parker added two assists and Terry
had one. Sophomore Olivia Baker chipped in with two scores. Senior
Stephanie Lawrence was solid in goal, stopping 12 shots.
For Lutheran, Maija Eshmont and Jordan
Certeza each fired in two goals, and Certeza assisted on one. Catherine
Kennedy contributed a goal and two assists. Aimee Chotikul notched six
saves while tending the nets. The Saints travel to Key next Tuesday.
Catholic also faces Key in its next
game, hosting the Obezags next Thursday. It might be tough for Catholic
- and Beth Tfiloh - to avoid looking past the next few opponents.
Looming on the schedule is Monday, April 23rd ... if each wins its
games between now and then, all versus teams below them in the
standings, the Cubs and Warriors would face off on that Monday at
Herring Run Park with identical 8-0 records, in a battle for first
place (they also meet later in the season at Beth Tfiloh on May 1st).
But that meeting is more than two weeks away, and sometimes ""looking
ahead" can lead to the unexpected upset.
