Urbana had two big reasons to win Thursday night. It was Senior Night and Coach Terry Connolly’s birthday.
The red hot Poolesville Falcons had other plans, which included continuing their six-game win streak.
But in the end, Urbana locked down on defense for a 40-37 overtime win. The Hawks' Jamie Lowe was able to force a late turnover and convert the fast break lay-up to complete the come-from-behind victory.
Lowe scored a team-high nine points, four of which came in the overtime period. Joe Novotny and Frankie Jarboe chipped in eight points each.
The Falcons (14-6) were led by Kevin Baker, who scored a game-high 18 points. Baker had to leave the game late in overtime with an ankle injury and the status of whether he can play versus Einstein tomorrow night is still up in the air.
Chris Soper also had a big game for Poolesville scoring eight points, including two big free throws late in the game.
The Hawks jumped out to an early 6 -0 lead in the first quarter, but the Falcons soared back on a 9-0 run. That was all was the scoring in the opening quarter. Baker had seven points in the first quarter.
The second quarter was very similar to the first. Urbana hit a few quick buckets, and then Poolesville responded late in the quarter. With the clocking winding down to end the half, Zach Cooper hit a half court shot to give Urbana a two-point lead going into the half.
Cooper led Urbana with seven points in the half. Baker led all scorers with 13 first half points.
The second half of the game was a defensive battle. Both teams were executing on defensive end of the floor. Brenden McFall had a big third quarter, scoring all five of his points he had in the game. McFall picked up his fourth foul in the third, and fouled out in the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Falcons kept their lead until the last seconds when the Hawks were able to tie it up and force overtime. At the end of regulation, the score was 33-33.
